I am with Case, we need to stop being so damned sensative. The world, in general, hates us. Screw them. Let them. It's our job, as Americans, to continue to improve and get better. Living well is the best revenge.

I think that axiom applies to celebrities, not products. In a competitive market, something to slightly taint your product can make a big difference. As it's been said, Absolut doesn't make the only, nor the best vodka. I don't buy a lot of the stuff, but I won't buy Absolut.

I agree that sometimes we're overly sensitive. But I also think there are times when you should take notice. I think the American market will tell Absolut what they need to be told, on their balance sheet.

I can tell you summit racing is very good. They say free shipping, but they include a handling charge. It's not real high though.

That ad was targeted for Mexicans in Mexico. Absolut didn't think we'd see it over here? It's kind of like the folks from Absolut wanted to touch a 3rd rail to see just how hot it was. Controversy and marketing usually aren't compatible.
Look up La Raza, and Aztlan. There are Mexicans who believe the land was stolen from them, and are actively interested in changing things.
Given our border issues, stupid move by Absolut.

A friend suggested doing the pump while I have the oil pan off. Is this a good idea? How robust are the pumps? The pressure on my car is good. I'm not in a hurry to burn money, but if it's a good idea, I'll bite the bullet.

Hmmmm, approximately $200 fine, versus crushing a $40,000 vehicle.

Ok, you win, it's the same.

You sort of seem to muddy the waters. Street racing is a dangerous activity. Defining 70 mph over the limit as street racing, no problem there. Suspension of license for a dangerous activity, check. Crushing one's car? That's bs. If you had enough property, you could drive that car on your property and not be in violation of any law, even without a license.
Killing someone while street racing? That's murder. Personal accountability. The person should pay the price. It's the communist and socialist countries that tie personal property into law enforcement.
If you have a large party and disturb the neighbors, should they take your house? Surely that would stop you from having disorderly parties?

I go for the parts/and for sale stuff. The general and tech stuff is beyond stupid now.

Coming to America soon, I'm sure.
I'm ok with the license suspension. 70mph over the limit is pretty reckless, and obviously willful speeding. But I also am a firm believer in private property rights. It's HIS car. When the state can and does take your property... well, it's just a way of signifying your lack of freedom.
Socialism is just a few steps from communism.

That's always a possiblity!

I have the money to pay to have this stuff done. I'm just debating it in my own mind and researching. First off, I'm cheap, and saving money is always good. Second, there's more satisfaction in doing things yourself.

On the shocks... they are compressed with a nylon strap. Once I cut that strap, will I need a compression tool of some sort?

Ok, this manual cranking, and get it to #4 TDC. You guys are over my head.

Manual cranking? Would that be cranking it while removing coil wire so that the engine doesn't fire?

Getting #4 to TDC? Only way I can even imagine doing that is sticking a something soft in the hole for the #4 plug and wait for it to be moved?

So, as I am interpreting this, the crank spins to a location where dropping the pan is obstructed by a structure in the oil pan?

This is what intimidates me about trying some of this stuff on my own. I have tools, but not lots. No impact wrench, no torch. I can leave the car in pieces in my garage, I have another car, but if I get in deeper than I want to deal with, I don't want to be in a situation where I can't get it road worthy to get it to a shop.

I need a mechanic friend in Ohio. I'd love to learn, and don't mind the work, just don't like being stuck.

I usually don't have good luck when I lump stuff together, but I hate to make a bunch of posts about simple questions, so here goes, (note; I have a 1987 A4 coupe):

How hard is it to replace an oil pan? I was thinking I didn't want to try to do it since I don't have a good way to get the car up very far. So I called for prices. Everyone is quoting like 3 hours work. One service writer said he thought maybe the motor had to be raised to clear the sump? I don't get it. I thought it was unbolt, clean, replace?

On to shocks. The front shocks are rated to be at least 2 hours shop time. The same service writer said you have to support the suspension, or the coil spring could pop? No experience here, and my resources are limited, so I'm asking here. Apparently the rear shocks are much easier?

Finally, my brakes were done by the dealer that sold me the car. They squeek. I was hoping that with time and use, that would go away. It's as bad as ever. Much more noticable on warm days, due to windows being down I guess. So, is there anything I can do, or are new pads the only option. I'd be willing to bet they used the cheapest pads they could find. And the pads do seem to be new, plenty of life left in them. They only squeek under light brake pressure.

Thanks.

The guy I know at the body shop helps me out with some simple stuff. I had him do the passenger door panel in my car because he's good, and cheap!
So, I go to pick it up and he tells me: "That's turning into a nice little car." He saw it right after I bought it. Made me feel pretty good. So, I drove it to work.
It's 65* here, the car is running good, the new stereo sounds great, and I got to show it off to coworkers.

My little 87 is coming along nicely.

- I've replaced the wheels and tires, good reviews here at work. Especially from the guy that owns an 84 Corvette.
- New stereo, head unit, speakers and wires.
- New passenger door panel.
- New hood emblem.
- I have new KYBs to be put on before I have it aligned.
- I have a new/used oil pan, gaskets and bolts to be put on.
- I have a tune up kit, wires, plugs, rotor, cap that I'm going to do this spring.
- A duplicolor kit to paint the calipers red.

By summer time, I'll be ready!

I have something I want to post on the classifieds. I went there and tried to put up a simple ad. It's not so simple. The only buttons I could find are "send" "preview" and "cancel". After hitting send a few times, and making sure all the required fields were filled in, I finally gave up and hit cancel.

What's up with that?

My concern on changing tops around is leaks.
Let us know the watertight integrity of your new top!

Looks great. I'm casually looking on ebay, but by next year, I'll be much more serious. I have a white and it just looks nicer with the painted top.

Interesting concept. Sort of like making it owned by the members. When that happens, you have to have share prices and then those people with ownership have a say in what happens, and then someone like Bogus/Bastet44 could own 51%. Then obviously as time goes on and the value increases, buying in costs more.

That's how my company is at least, but I'm not much of a business man, they want me to buy-in but I don't want in. How do you determine the value of a forum anyways? I guess it's all a matter of profitability?

Where I was trying to get to with my idea is that on the event of a sale, those donating would get their money back and maybe even a few extra bucks. That's why the it would be a percentage buy in, even if it is a very small percentage.

So, assume I give $100 to the Guru. Ok, what does that buy me? Not much, I just support the Guru. I don't vote on anything. I don't get dividends. Bogus and company get to run it as they see fit. I don't have the option to withdraw my donation. Once given, it's gone, so no obligation to Bogus to keep cash on hand for those leaving.
Now, let's assume the Guru has become the #1 destination on the internet, and Bogus sells it for $2 billion. My $100 helped Bogus get to a position to sell his empire. It's not quite fair for Bogus to take all the money and run. So, I have a 0.01% stake. Bogus pays me $200k for my help in creating his empire.
It's a stake excercised only upon sale of the Guru. Seems fair to me.

I wasn't at the other place that long, but the concept of being a supporting member and having it sold that reeks. If I had donated to a site, assuming it was user owned and operated, only to have the jack boots come in, I'd be more than annoyed.
Here's an idea. Supporting membership translates to a small piece of the action. Not daily, not like stocks, only in the event of a sale. So, if someone gives $100, they own 0.0x% of the guru, on event of sale. No dividends, no payments to those buying in, unless you sell. That way, if someone wants to, they could buy in as much as they like. Those buying in, unless it was substantial, would have no say so on when or if to sell, or daily operations, (beyond that of all the users here).
I'm not sure of the legal aspect, but I would guess it could be constructed fairly simply.

Thanks Bill. Mid America has a kit for $59. I think I'm going to give that a shot. That way, I can be a little more confident of the color match.

Well, if you happen to drive through Ohio, I'll let you have a listen.
The reason I chose the Panasonic is because it had 2 antenna wires. So, if I play a CD, the antenna stays down. It only raises the antenna for the radio.
The downside of the Panisonic is the buttons are kept to a minimum. So most of the config and operation is done by key sequence and reading the LCD display. Without the remote, it's a pain in the arse. You need a remote for a car radio in a Corvette... go figrue.

My first guess is 1984 - 1989. 1990 had the new interior, and the Bose unit looks different.

I don't have anything against Bose. I do think their arrangement on the C4 is unusual, (amps at the speakers).
I replaced mine because:
#1 - It was old and not working well.
#2 - It only had a tape player.
#3 - The cost of repair would have taken me more than 1/2 to a new system.

I replaced it, I'm happy. If my old system worked a little better and had a CD, I'd have left it. It's not like when I jump in my Corvette, my goal is a studio listening experience.

I saw the Duplicolor post. That's not for me. It's a paint. I want a dye, something that will work into the leather and not work into my clothes.

I put some black leather dye on my steering wheel yesterday, and polished it today. I wish I had a before picture, it really made a big improvement. Lots cheaper than a new wheel too.
My seats are red, and have some wear. If I could get the right color dye, I know it would make a big improvement there. Anyone ever dye their seats? Where do you get the dye? Does it match well enough you can do a section without doing the whole seat back? That would be ideal.

Here's how my wheel looks now:

I have to tell you, I'm so sick of that response, "sell it and buy a C5". On another website, if you ask any question about improving your C4, within the first 5 replies, some a**hole will chime in: "sell it and buy a C5". As if that was original, or somehow made them clever. It's a good thing you can't punch people over the internet!

Oh. I was mistaken about tsb's then. I thought they indicated a high failure item.

I agree, the Japanese small cars beat the heck out of American cars. The point of my post is the Japanese cars have this reputation as super reliable almost perfect cars. Well, my son would tell you the $1700 he's spending on an ABS problem tells him that Japanese cars are flawed too. It boggles my mind that the problem has a tsb, and no fix for the root cause. In another 20k miles, there's nothing to say he won't have another ABS problem.

Yea, I pondered the chrome also. Had a guy at work do some magic with a photo program and the silver suited my taste. I love the change it made over the stock rims. Gotm on Ebay, tires (kuhmo ecsta supra) and rims $800. Couldn't beat that with 2 sticks.

You must have bought AFS, I got the chrome with Kumhos. $970 shipped, with lugnuts. I like the silver, considered polished, but went with chrome. Can't go wrong, anything but stock!

That was a midly expensive swing of the hammer, as I'm finding out. But, if it felt good, it's a win for you!

How about some pics of your dash with the new unit and a bit more info on the new install?

Won't be until Friday I can do that. I will tell you, it's a nice unit, but not uber geek stuff. No navigation, no dvd, it doesn't brew coffee. They used a spacer that puts the single din unit in the middle of the 1 1/2 din openening. The spacer also pushes the face of the headunit forward so that it looks more natural where it is, as opposed to a flat spacer. I'm pleased, I'll get pics.

Not that it counts. But my 92 Civic DX gets 44 MPG in town and up the hills with 210K on the clock.

Not a Corvette.

But.........haven't heard of any USA cars doing this as of yet

Corvettes can go 200k+, but not at 44MPG. But... does the Civic make you smile?

My son bought a used 2004 Nissan Maxima about a year ago. The ABS controller in that car failed. He looked it up and there is a tsb on it that described his exact problem. He took the car to the dealer and was told, too bad, doesn't happen to enough of them to be a covered repair. Nissan burns the VIN into the ABS controller. So he has to use the dealer, other mechanics told him they just have to get the part from the dealer. The cost of the repair? $1700, and it will take a week and a half to get one.
At least the dealer comped him a rental.

I'll take the old Corvette, thank you.

Well, my car won't be an NCRS candidate. I've already replaced the wheels and got rid of the old ones. The exhaust was broken, so I put a new Magnaflow on it. I'll do more stuff, so it will be nice, but not a NCRS car. You're right, it's small, but I can't imagine needing it.

I finally got the new radio today. Wow, what a difference. And I think I got a good deal. A new Panisonic CQ-C700U head unit, and 4 new Pioneer speakers. They ran new wires for everything, $575 complete. I've used these guys before, they have a nice business.
Anyway, the reason for the post, I have a Bose system, head unit, 4 speakers. It worked, sort of, when I had it removed. One of the front speakers would cut in and out, and the back speakers would crackle sometimes. Have no clue if the tape works. This would be something that would require a rebuild. Is it worth anything?

Very nice. I went with the chrome on my 87 white coupe.
Big improvement over stock!

I gave my timing light away about 5 years ago. Nice move. I also need a fuel pressure gauge for testing. Any recommendations for brands? Price levels?
I saw some stuff on ebay. Nice and cheap. I don't need heavy duty, the only car I ever work on is my Corvette.

Just like any additive. Put it in the tank and drive the car normally.

When you're sucking it into the intake, that's when you rev it. And make sure you don't do it too fast.

I figured that's how you did it. I've seen you can buy the door panel carpet separate. No way I'm going to take the carpet off of new panels. The doors and seats tie in very well with the dash. Sort of tones down the red, and gives your car a unique but not outrageous look.

I'm really liking the black red door panel. I just replaced mine or I'd try to do the same! That looks great. I like the black seats too.

Superior job.

The guru has come of age. Seafoam is here.

Autozone sells it.
Pour 1/2 or even a whole can in the gas tank after filling. You can also get a hose, and suck 1/2 can into the intake through a vacuum. You have to be careful not to let it go to fast or you'll hydrolock the car.

There are basic items. Rotor, cap, wires, plugs, pcv valve. I'm doing all that if it EVER warms up. thepartsladi has an L98 tune up kit for $72. Has everything but the pcv valve. The timing can be checked and set as well.

Then there is the ever popular seafoam!

I understand the threat of inflation. I just don't understand how that translates to a retreat in commodities?
