Man I've been wanting to go Jetskiing on the IL river!

Well I had a much more successful day today tinkering with the car. Finished up the driver's side with the help of the ball end socket. I also got the passenger side installed. The driver side goes in from the top, passenger side from the bottom. It takes some wiggling but it will go in. On the passenger side I had trouble with the bolt behind the number 6 cylinder. No room to play. So what I did is ground of the short end of an allen key to about half the size and that gave me more room to maneuver. Once the headers were in I connected the sensors, put in my motor mount through bolts (which could have been done before). I also made sure to zip tie a few wires out of the way so they don't rest on the headers. I couldn't remember where the rear alternator bracket went on the original manifold so I'll fiddle with that when I put the accessories back on. Either the stud will go back on or I'll make it work.

Photobucket

Photobucket

What I used as far as bolts and tools. 3/8-16 1" stainless steel hex cap bolts with lock washers and several variations of allen keys. I got a nice set of the ball end hex keys at grainger, they are eklind.

A few more little projects at this pace and I'll be done....can't wait.

Matthew

I figured you were fighting with something the other night, could tell you sounded pretty frustrated. but the end is near! And it's looking awesome and your doing great with the progress and pics! keep it up!

the ball and socket is what i used on my 89 and I did then same, I cut the 3 bolt flange off and with the ball and socket style, the sealing was better.

I like this idea too Jeff, the ball and socket style, makes lining/fitting everything else up down the line much easier.. as when you have a slip fit or clamped connection everything must be straight to seal correctly. and it doesn't give you really any room to adjust/align things.

Yeah, I love their enthusiasm and that they really appreciate the car for what it is, a great piece of American muscle, a Corvette!

Agree.. this was a fun watch.. I'm always looking for stuff that needs repair, to buy cheap fix (and add value to) and resell.. I love watching other people do the same to see how they do it.. now I wonder how many other issues the car had they didn't repair.. it seems they fixed mostly the cosmetics, and a few things that needed to work... what about the brakes/suspension oil leaks underneath ect..

Just a tip, find a local shop that rebuilds alternators and starters. They will usually use a higher grade part than the Chinese people who put together the store bought cookie cutter units.

I will usually buy an alternator that was built in the smaller shop. They can also test your store bought unit and tell you if it's in tip top shape, and if need be, they can rebuild it inexpensively using much better parts.

Thats why we normally use a local rebuilder for our shop, and tend to not use the local parts stores...

I dyed my steering wheel and the results are awesome. So, I thought I'd buy some leather dye, since my driver's seat has some wear on the bolster. My interior is flame red, for an 87. Specified that, bought the kit.
First thing I noticed is the kit looks like something a 3rd grader would put together with a chemistry set and his Dad's PC to make the labels. And it worked just about as well.
It's not a dye, it's a paint. And what's worse, the color match is not there, it's about 10 shades off, it's kind of a pink.
The kit is open and used, I have no shot of getting anything back from Ecklers, but I'm warning you guys, if you're looking at dying your seats, stay away from Ecklers. I'm very surprised and disappointed that Ecklers didn't do any quality control on this stuff. I guess Ecklers figures buyer beware. I figure I won't be using Ecklers.

Did you try to contact them? And at least tell them about the problem? I bought a vynil grand sport stripping kit from them one time.. I specificly asked does this kit require painting the stripes or is it a complete vynil stripe kit. They said no it looks like it is a complete kit with the center stripe...

So When I got it I was really excited to put it on. I installed the red hash marks, they came out awesome.. so I we to installing the rest of the kit which was on 2 sperate sheets. I roll it out to find it is a "pin striping kit" (like an replica for the original) I called them, talked to the same lady that took my order and explained the problem, I used part of the kit not knowing / not looking at the rest of the kit. she said send back what I didn't use ect.. the credited me for the whole deal... so I would probably buy from them again, if I really needed something and couldn't find a good deal on it somewhere else...

So anyway I would call them and see...

BTW once you can access the lines when the trans is out.. make sure to use a line wrench this helps keep you from rounding off the hex at the fitting...

Yep, makes it easier.. and he already has the motor out...

On the cooler lines on trick the trans guys do.. and if you have a "show car" and use mirrors under your car you might not want to do... The trick is to cut the lines with a small pipe cutter, where they are straight at an accessible location near the front of the trans/back of the motor. Then use compression fittings to re-attach the lines later. It works quite well.

Good Morning CGs!

Slept in a bit this morning and it was nice. I found some extra energy last night so I started cleaning up the garage. Spent a couple hours and it barely looks like I did anything! Started organizing my toolbox a bit and there's still a lot of room for more stuff. Guess it's time to buy more tools! Ha. Actually, I need to organize my garage better. I'm trying to keep my mechanic's/car tools separate from my house tools the best I can. We'll see how that works out.

Got a lot on my plate today. Go get fitted for my tux. Work in the garage and try to pull the trans. Cut the back grass (did the front yesterday). And then take a nap before we go out tonight to celebrate my BILs bday. Whew.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Matthew

What are you getting a Tux for? LoL...

I assume you picked up the new box?

What!?!? I thought you wanted the learning experiance? It's not that big of a deal, for the parts you could spend around $200 in parts maybe a little more depending on if you want to replace your drum ect. and anything that might be worn.. Plus wouldn't you like to take 300+ pics of the inside of your trans?

BTW you could also install a higher stall/performance converter for around $250. Might not be a bad idea with the new cam ect. as your power band will be raised. Just depends on what you want the new power for... drag strip mostly & street or going road course.. a higher stall would probably fit you.. unless you plan on doing road course then it really hurts the driveability and trans. You may also want to install a trans cooler with or without doing any other trans work with all the heat going on in there.. I would reccomend a hayden stacked plate design cooler.

For your use I would probably stick with a 2200-2400 stall speed.. I have a 2600 in mine, but it can be a bit much especially when I was running the 3.75 gears.

Another thing about higher stall speed converters, is that like on our cars that feature a "lock-up" or torque converter clutch.. the fuel economy on the highway really isn't effected, though around town it will be..

Yeah.....I had a dream the other night that you bought a used 700 trans for $100 that was blown up and brought it over to my house so we could build it. It's a sign! I've been kicking it around, depending on what the turn around time on the machine shop is.

Matthew

Dreaming about me again wtf? LoL.... Hell yea I'd say call vette2vette and lets get one and build it! If it's on the bench it doesnt take that long to build one, just get a big bench to lay everything out on! A GOOD set of snap ring pliers and a few other things...

Kevin - I had already wanted to rebuild it in conjunction with my top end rebuild. I am of the notion that you should refresh everything on a higher mileage car when you're doing that. Just my opinion. Of course it was covered in gunk from years of oil leaks. I was also concerned about some metal, possibly bearing, shavings in the oil change. I thought the head gasket might be weeping, but turned out to be ok.

Don - I took one break the first day to get some lunch and run to the store for my wife. Maybe an hour and a half or so. Worked from 8:30 til 9 pm the first day. Second day I only worked about 3 hours total, pulled it out and got in on the stand and stripped.

Andy - I have an old utility sink that I plan on using as my parts washer. I do remember your magnesium issue with the simple green, so thanks for the suggestion on the other formulation.

Oh, and regarding the swivel sockets - I checked out the craftsman ones, they were like $70 a set, the one 9/16th was $10 alone. A set of 8 or 9 HF Pittsburgh swivel sockets is $24.99. Guess I know which one I'll be getting.

Yea the utility sink would work for using simple green, but if you wanted to use more of a solvent, I'm not sure how the plastic would hold up long term ect. If I had the space I'd probably want a parts washer as well in the garage. But for now I don't really need it enough and I can always take stuff to work and do it of break.. Pulling this motor was def. a good learning experiance no doubt. You've had a good percentage of your car apart already. your quickly catching up to me, if not passed me up LoL... Can't wait till you do the trans that will be fun! It's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be once it's on the bench, just takes some technique like everything else...

So how do you like it?

I have/had one of these somewhere I used it a couple times, but since I park the car outside alot, I don't feel like installing it and removing it all the time...

Well I had zero inclination to go in the garage today, but I popped my head in for one minute. I couldn't find a part number on those head gaskets, might have been corroded.

I also checked the cylinder walls a little better. They were smooth with zero scoring and didn't appear to be glazed. Also, the ridge I thought I felt on the cylinder seems to have been some corrosion or junk built up on the lip. So it's visually in good shape, but wouldn't actually know without some type of mechanical indicator.

On a side note, the builder I was gonna use is backed up with 6 other engines and can't do mine. I'm not happy. I have a couple more leads to track down.

Matthew

Awaiting to hear what happens next... Also as I said get a long extension and that 9/16 flex socket. Those top 2 bellhousing bolts are a pain... Especially doing this on the floor without a lift.

You are pretty much already there.. just pull the C-Beam and the Driveshaft, and a couple small things... the parts to rebuild it are not that bad...

And I would use the AMSOil, I've always have had good luck with it...

Matthew, these are the rotors I installed on Arun's Z06 he picked them out, along with a set of Hawk Pads, he hasn't had as good of luck with this combo as with stock Z06 pads and the stock rotors. More then likely it's the pads though then anything.

I didn't look but do they make them for the stock C4 rear? so that you can have a matched set if you go with them?

These rotors do have a strange pattern, almost like an Atom symbol...
