I'm just wondering what nifty tricks you guys have employed to keep your laptop from sliding all over the place when you do a datalog while driving.

The last few times I did a datalog my laptop kept sliding all around the seat and the screen wanted to flop close on me. I piled some towels up on the seat to flatten it out a bit, but still a PITA. I'm planning ahead a little bit and thinking about next year when I'll be doing this again.

Any fancy fixes out there you guys have incorporated? Or am I just goofy and you guys have no problem with it at all?

Hmmm...I just put it on the seat next to me and haven't had problems. Try a piece of rubber or those pads you put under a rug while it's on the seat.

I had my laptop on all the time when I was working, I left it in my laptop bag and ran the seatbelt thru the bag handles.

You could use the same thing that C5 autocrossers use under their butts. The rubber shelf/toolbox liner.

I had my 10 year old hold it last time.
Seriously, a piece of rubber, or lay it on the floor.

OK... No High-Tech problem solvers here. I need to get a son to hang on to the laptop for me too. Maybe he can cut the grass and take out the trash too. Only kidding.

I like to do a run, stop the car; save it and then create another run perhaps a little different and then save it. So I wind up stopping and trying to keyboard a little bit and its a pain if the computer is on the floor or sliding off the seat.

Maybe your seats don't slope down like mine do, but I was thinking about cutting some foam so it would fit the contours of the seat and then making a cutout to fit the laptop.

How often are you data logging? If you want a real solution get a RAM mount. We use them in our test vehicles. You can get a cheap one for $100, they bolt to the seat bolts.

If you aren't datalogging often enough to spend money on one then set your laptop up to stay alive when the lid is closed. Start recording and close the lid. You can slide it in between the seat and the console. That's what I used to do when I used a cheap web cam to record race videos.

mine has the: stupid/can't move around in sport seats so the laptop doesn't move..What you might want to consider is one of those elavated plastic tray/bases (cheap at best buy). It allows the processor fan to draw air in and on the bottom you can mount some foam/rubber.

The problem I had is sometimes the Tunerpro would quit reading data. And it would sometimes hang up my computer to where I had to restart it and start over.

Not sure what two sided carpet tape would do to the seat leather (you could try it on the back of seat down low first). Or how about just rigging a bungie cord or two?

That's a common problem with the 86-89 7165 ECMs, some better than others. It's not the software nor the laptop!
