As the title states....I want to know everything about them. What brand are you using/motor set up/pros/cons, etc.
I noticed a miss at higher rpm doing some WOT testing. Took my buddy for a ride today and he noticed it right away. Somewhere around 5400+ rpm. He suggested I get an MSD ignition box to help out. He had one on his 10 sec 3rd gen and says it's necessary. So what do you guys run? Matthew |

I would disagree with your friends assessment.
With your combo, a properly functioning stock ignition system should work well to 6000 rpm. By well, I mean no misfires. With the above said, I do run a Crane box, because I was tired of replacing my MSD box very 18 months. I ran my best et ever when my MSD was disconnected (returned to them for yet another overhaul). I twisted that last motor to 6000 and was running a 175 shot of spray at the time, with zero ignition misfires. Nitrous Oxide increases cylinder pressures a ton, and usuall shows ignition shortcomings. |

I'm with Pete. Not really nessecary on most street cars.
You could have some issues with your stock HEI that need attention thou. Start with the basics. Check the cap, rotor, wires and plugs themselves. Once you start increasing compression (dynamic) you make it harder for the plug fire to light the mixture.... the flame kernel gets blown out easier. Stock heat range plugs, and plug gaps no longer apply 100%. Some ignition boxes do have some really nice additional features for racing. Window switches, 2 step launch control, individual timing control trims..... Will |

I've gone through the whole distributor within the last year and 500-1000 miles while I was chasing down issues. The cap/rotor/rotor button are probably 4 years old, those are the oldest part on the dizzy. Those don't show signs of arcing or wear.
New(er): wires plugs ignition control module pick up coil capacitor harness ignition coil drive gear also, shimmed/cleaned/rebuilt There is a noticeable miss above say 53-5400 rpms. I have to datalog it, but when I play on the street a little with some WOT bursts I can feel it. I value both of your opinions highly. Suggestions? Matthew |

Are you certain it is an ignition miss?
I would tighten up the plug gap to .030 and see what happens. |

Re routed the wires and all that.... I'd double check that those wires are on the cap tight and not grounding anywhere - spray some WINDEX on the wires... it will arc out where it's bad in a heart beat Will |

I'll add some more info I thought of. My ignition miss before was caused by low alternator voltage under heavy load. The cs144 upgrade seemed to solve that. The miss I experienced yesterday may have been when the motor was hot and the voltage was lower. I tached the car out a few times thois morning to 5800 or so with zero noticeable miss....air temps around 48* and water/oil in the 180-190 range. Alt voltage was up and down but over 13.2 on dash. I am going to add a thick ground from alt case to block and see if it helps.

Reving the motor without being under load will not detect a problem. If the alternator is bolted to the engine, then it's grounded. You are correct in saying either a weak battery or a faultey alternator will cause all kind of problems on a computer operated car. The alternator needs to put out 13.8-14.0 volts.

Thanks for the response. The wot bursts were under load driving on a long stretch of road. My alt case is only using the front support, no rear bracket due to my heades. I will address the bracket issue later but start with the ground.
