So, I've noticed that the fluid level in my MC is goofy. This is for my 89. The rear reservoir is overflowing and the front is low. If you remove the rear lid it literally pours over. From briefly checking the schematics in the FSM, it looks like the o-rings on the piston might be bad. That is, of course, an assumption on my part, but it seems probable.

So here's my rant...rebuild kit....$171?

http://www.corvettespecialty.com/master-cylinder-repair-kit

And a new AC Delco master cylinder is like $267. I can get a rebuilt cardone from rockauto for $61.

To be honest with you, I'd rather rebuild it myself. So what are the chances of just getting brake fluid compatible o-rings and swapping them out. Is that possible/practical?

Let me hear your experiences.

Aren't O rings .
Are tapered cups that push against the bore under pressure to make the seal
Typical MC

If you rebuild it yourself and then drive off a cliff it is going to be declared suicide and your insurance won't pay.

Yea, that's the kit price everywhere and yea, no O-rings.

With all the stories I've heard about Cardone, I wouldn't, especially brakes.

Corvette Central has the Delco for $249.

I have a bunch of 89-90 MC parts if you want to give it a go..

I rebuilt mine in my 90 with some the extra parts I have, it no longer leaks.

But you are more then welcome to some of the parts to try if you want..

MC rebuilding is easy, I might even have a good core to use..

OR

buy a 4th gen F-body Master from a LS1 (with the fittings) and reflare your lines with those fittings.

use a spacer between the MC and booster and they will work better. I did that to my 89 in 2004 or 2005 and never had any issues, so did about 4 others and they still use that set-up

I even have the spacer for that set-up if you prefer

For the record, yes, the internal seals are definitely bad. I got lucky and Ecklers had a PBR unit available at the time for $120 for my 85. Must have been a typo. I guess I better take good care of it now.

both solutions work and the F-body master can be had for $25 on eBay ( I paid that for the one I had on my 89)

Jeff - do you know what type flare fitting the F-bodies use? I know the y-bodies use that goofy bubble flare.

Same bubble flare, but a different threaded fitting. that $11.99 looks like it has lines with it, so the fittings will be there

I think I'm gonna go that route - I can buy the bubble flare tool for $25. Can you tell me anymore about the spacer? Or is there a write-up on TGO or anywhere else?

Can you buy the new fbody m/c and steal the seals out of it?

CC - I don't know, I think they are different?

I've been reading about the upgrade a bit, but all I can find is 3rd gen camaro upgrade info. But apparently this is a very popular upgrade with them. Many seem to have to add a proportioning valve, though, but it seems they are going from rear drum brakes/master cylinders or have brake conversions, too. I think since the LS1 camaro already has 4 wheel discs it shouldn't be a big issue. I've seen many threads where guys are running an aftermarket wilwood proportioning valve. Something to consider.

F-body internals are different. I just swapped to the F-body and had no issues, same with about 4 others.

like I said, I have a box of 89-91 MC parts..

Jeff - I think the LS1 m/c swap looks like a very viable option. Can you tell me more about the spacer?

If I recall right they are 3/16" thick and fit between the booster and MC.. I know I have a 2 or 3 in my tool box..

a buddy of mine custom made them for a bunch of us years ago..

you want one?

I would, Jeff. What is the purpose? Is it because the vette lines are longer or the booster is different? Rod length?

I believe the distance of the new master is shallow compared to OEM, so if you bolt it direct, brakes are applied always. the spacer sets the proper distance for the rod from the booster to the master itself..

make sense?

That's what I figured, wasn't 100%.

You plan on going to the Oakbrook car show next Sat? I know it's still a bit of a drive for you, but I'd like to get together with a few of us.
