Thoughts and opinions would be appreciated on this intermittent starting issue we're having with the box truck. It's a 3500 van with a cargo box on the back, 350 V8, automatic. On occasion when you turn the key to the start position, just before cranking, the idiot lights for the seat belt, ABS, battery will not light up. The starter will turn but it won't start. After multiple start attempts, the lights will come on. When I see the lights I know she will start. It has an aftermarket alarm but when activated it won't do anything when you turn the key. I'm assumimg a no start condition (starter will not engage), applies with the activated alarm. Which way do you lean on this? An alarm issue or an ignition switch issue or maybe something else. I'm all ears for guru guidance. Like I said, it's intermittent. My luck, I'd bring it to the shop and it won't malfunction.

These keys don't look chipped. It does act something like a vats issue though. You turn the key and it's like it's missing a step in the ignition process, like not showing engine warning lights and spark. Guess I have to find out about VATS and these vehicles. I cleaned the keys with alcohol to no avail. I did that because it worked with the Vettes before and thinking along the VATS line. Thanks for the suggestion though. Alarm bypass? I'll look into that also. Come to think of it. There are no factory security lghts on this either. You know how we have a solid or flashing security light on the Vettes. I'll dig deeper into this aspect.

Yes

Easy peasy, find the hot wire to the alarm box, unless an idiot installed it, every aftermarket alarm has an inline fuse.

Pull the fuse and see if the problem returns.

BTW, you ain't got no stinkin' VATS.

I can do one better. The alarm installer is my friend. He will check it out for free. If it isn't alarm related then I'll move on from there. I'm just trying to pull from the knowledge of the guru pool.

Check the alarm first. They cause a lot of problems.

Interesting. My 99 Yukon and 2005 Silverado both have an anti theft system. I'm gonna check my 02 S-10. Right now the truck has been starting. It could happen on the third shut down and restart or the tenth or no issue at all for weeks. I wish stuff would just break. That way you can fix it.

Turns out it was the ignition wiring harness. Disconnected the aftermarket alarm. The truck does have VATS it turns out. I was looking to the left for the security lighting and it was on the lower right. Never even noticed it. Our regular mechanic repaired it. $120 for the part 80 for r/r . I ain't complaining one bit. He had all the right tools for the job.

So what do you call it when the idiot doesn't notice it?

I looked. I just didn't see it. Don't forget, I wasn't getting any lights. It's when I got lights I knew it would start. I'll admit to being an idiot though. Once I accepted it, I had a reason why everything I touched turned to shit.
