I'll be ordering my AFR 195 street elims next week. I need advice on which spring to get. The cam is a Bullet cam 226/230.565.565 111lsa. I'll also be running Comp Cams 1.6 full rollers. I have LS7 lifters in the car now. The lower end is stock. 1 5/8 SW headers.

Will the standard spring which has a max lift of .600 and a seat pressure of 135 @ 1.800 be enough or should I upgrade to the next spring which has a max .650 lift with a seat pressure of 155 @ 1.810?

So far I've recieved differing opinons. I'd like to hear what you guys think.

Thanks

Do you know what is stock spring rate?

If it's in 370 lbs/in range, you're good to go!

These are what I have on the car now with the stock heads. They were recommended by LE to go with the cam I have now when I was considering him to port my stockers. THey are part of his LE II package. They are similar to the AFR 8019 springs which is the next inline from AFR above the standard 8017.

Spring rate on the 8017 is 360

Spring rate on the 8019 is 428

Run the standard springs with a .015 shim under them.
That is assuming the .015 will not put you over the line into coil bind. I don't recall the lift on you cam, but if it is less than .580 you will be fine.

.565/.565 Pete

I was trying to get a spring that would work from AFR already on the heads. No problem doing the shims I just was trying to get by without removing the springs. Seems like they should have a spring that would fit my cam without having to go through all of that.

The AFR base spring will actually be fine for you. I am anal, and like things my way, so I would add the shims.
I am also a fan of disassembling any new head to be sure there are no burrs, dirt, debris or hidden problems.
AFR makes a great product, but I am fussy. If I sell a set to a customer, or buy a set for myself, checking, and double checking is just my nature.

If you have a minute can you explain briefly what adding the shims do? Maybe that will help me understand better.

If I get the shims do they have to be the exact size of the OD of the springs or can they be slightly larger or smaller?

First it is get the seat and open pressures up a bit.

Second it will take some of the free travel out of the spring at max lift which reduces the chance of spring surge.

Most engine builders prefer to have about .060 left in a spring at max lift (before coil bind) to keep the spring harmonics in check.

The AFR springs are good to .600 lift so with your .565 lift cam you would have roughly .095 left before coil bind in the AFR 8017 spring.

On a mild hyd roller w/moderate RPM capability like yours, IMO you could run them as is... but I would shim them up ( a little more than his recommendation thou). Like PeteK I like to make everything as perfect as possible.

Thanks Will, So adding the rr's in takes up the some more of the .095 I have left, correct.

It's starting to click now.

I looked at Summit and could not find shims the exact OD dia. of the springs. The closest was 1.250 the Standard springs are 1.290. Should I look somewhere else and get it closer?

You'll have measure the spring shims that come on the AFR's and buy ones that match the OD and ID as appropriately. I buy my spring shims (VSI) via Goodson.
