Ditto - hope someone who is good at reading piston tea leaves can chime in!

I would buy a cheap small block chevy head gasket, retorque the drivers side, and leakdown #1.
That does not look good.
If you measure the valve and guide wear in that cylinder and it is good, I would be concerned.

Thanks Pete,

What kind of tool do I need to measure the guide with? Will a digital caliper work that measures inside dimensions work? If it will what is the max it can be larger than the valve stem?

It would involve a machine shop. They have a special tool to mic the guides. Someone with a ton of experience can also move the valve off the seal slightly, and give it the "wiggle test" to feel the wear.
.0015 to .002 is typical valve guide clearance on a motor with some miles.

I would not spend a whole lot of time diagnosing the guides. A leakdown test is probably best. If the rings are leaking excessively, better to know now, than later.

Guess I was having a bad day when I did this.........dummy!!!!

Remember back when I had all those problems after the cam install? I had put a test spring on the number 1 cylinder to use with the degree kit. I had to change the base for the spring so I took off the oil seal. Guess what, I evidently forgot to put it back on and misplaced it and forgot about it. I would think that would let enough oil into the cylinder to smoke up the top of that piston like that. Hopefully this was a self inflected wound and nothing else is wrong.

I have no clue as to why you can't enlarge these pictures I put up here. I haven't moved or deleted anything. Sorry!

You can go here to see it in my album

That is a good sign. Normal age (and wear) combined with a compromised oil seal can definately result in what you have. Looks like your luck is improving!
