Hello, fellows, my 92 ( 59k) today for the first time when starting after driving a few hours, the brake pedal went easily almost to the floor, I then noticed the brake alarm came in, I had to drive a littler and slowly the pedal firmed up and the brake alarm light went out. I check the manual and it says the light is a differential alarm and should not go out until something is repaired etc.
The brake master cylinder is full ( dark oil, new pads 3k ago) Is the master cylinder starting to fail? If so what other indictaions should I expect? No ASR alarms in. Any ideas ? Thanks Highrider Las Vegas |

I would check for a leak someplace, but it sounds like it could be the master cycl. starting to fail..

I would bleed the system, if nothing else.
If the brake fluid is black, it MUST be replaced. Check the master cylinder for leaks. If you see wet where the master meets the power brake booster, you have a leak. But that doesn't mean that the master is still ok... if the internal seal is bad, you won't ever get a good FIRM pedal. Use a good brake fluid. Motul, Ford Motorsports are some of the better fluids. Use DOT 3 or DOT 4. Do NOT use DOT 5. Read this: Brake Fluids |

I would agree with what was said. First thing I would try is bleeding the brakes, but there's a good chance the internal seals are leaking in the MC.
As far as cost, are you replacing it yourself or having a shop do it? The part (remanufactured) should run around $225 - maybe higher or lower depending on who/where. Shop would probably charge a couple hundred to install and bleed the system. Matthew |

My 93 had the exact same symptoms (DIC light coming on and black fluid). I wont say I was right, but I decided not to bleed the brakes because I assumed it would be pumping all the old black fluid and contaminants through the brake and ASR system (if it hadnt already got there)
just my way of thinking!?
I did remove and strip down the master cylinder. I found the proportioning valve gummed up and not being able to move freely. I didnt have any new seals for the MC so I thoroughly cleaned everything in the MC and reassembled. Only then did I flush and bleed the system with new fluid. I dont usually prat around with brakes or steering, so I ordered a new MC, however 10,000km later and the repair hasnt given one problem nor a brake warning light, so the new MC is just sitting in the garage. Just my experience, but the guy's above have tons more vette knowledge than me and their advice is undoubtedly better. |

Yea, like Bogas said, bleed it and check for leaks. I don't think I'd spend money on higher dollar fluid right now though, unless you use the brakes very hard. I'd use a good regular price fluid until you find out if the fluid change fixes things.
I's put in Castrol LMA, it does have a higher boiling point than most off the shelf fluids. And you can usually find it at Pep Boys. It's what I use in the racecars (lighter weight), my 92 and my pickup. |

To be honest, the ABS system is a passive stand alone component of the brake system. It's fluid, is separate from the main line fluids. This is why bleeding the brakes is no different from an ABS system and non-ABS system. This is also why, if the ABS fails, the brakes continue to function as normal. |

Correct me if I'm wrong Andy, but on my 93 the brake lines run through the ASR/ABS module behind the drivers seat. At least that's what the FSM say's. This is why I did not want to pump contaminated fluid through it ??? |

they do, but the fluids don't mix.
I don't know how the ABS pumps work, but they don't pump the actual brake fluid... it is kinda like a remote pumping effect thing happening. |

Thats strange Andy. The FSM say's there is a bleed valve on the ASR/ABS module and it did in fact bleed out fluid when I pumped new fluid through!... oh well mystery to me! |
