Hey guys I could really use some help. I have a 1988 vette convertible with a ZZ383 and a first fuel injection unit. I am looking for someone who is knowledgeable with OBD1 and who can put a good tune on this motor. Presently I have a floating idle which I think would be cured with a reset of the IAC and TPS. But the real problem is I think I am leaving alot of power on the table. The car just doesn't seem that quick. I am running a 700r4 with supposedly a 2800 stall and I have no idea what has been done to the chip. Any help would be much appreciated

The IAC and TPS adjustment is a simple procedure. Do you have a timing light and a voltmeter? Has the IAC ever been changed or even cleaned?

Where are you in Chicago? If you can't get it yourself I'd be happy to help you with that.

As far as the tune, did you build the car or buy it? Who tuned the car originally? Most tuners will be willing to work with you until it's perfect, using datalogging software.

Joe (flyboy) on here found a tuner willing to do some tuning on a dyno which is the best way. He can chime in with that info.

Where are you located in Chicago?

Matthew

Matatk, (Matt) you're a "south sider", who's doing your tune? Maybe he could help.

My tuner is MSeven, Mick. He is doing it via mail, though.

Ok, I live in North Beverly, approx 9100 S. Western. I built the car although it was put together at my brother-in-laws shop. The guys who put the wiring back together are no longer working there. The car has had 5 separate tunes including a dyno tune. There were wiring and sensor issues that caused these all to be a waste. I just brought the car back from arkansas, where a supposed expert in fuel injection supposedly put a dyno tune on the car yet left it with a floating idle and a missing sensor. After studying the service manuals I now think I have all of the Sensors hooked up.Matt I would appreciate any help I could get I realize setting timing is easy, yet I can never seem to get it right I am looking for 32 degrees at 4000rpm. the whole computer thing throws me off.

I'm sure you know this but with the EST connector unplugged,(located near the brake booster) the initial timing can be set by turning the distributor. After that the advance is controlled by the ECM according to sensor input and programming.

Joe, while I am aware of that I cant seem to find that wire. Also and I am sure this seems stupid but what happens when you turn the distributor without disconnecting that wire?

This is the EST connection on my '91.
You will get a false reading otherwise.

Hit the big "Reply " button at the bottom of the last post (pics can't be posted in the large message box at the end of the thread).

Hit Browse, find the pic on your computer, open it, hit Upload and the Submit.

Thanks guys, Im at work now but I will try to upload some pictures tomorrow morning. I think mine may be buried in a loom behind the motor just above the trans. Hopefully I can reach it with my sausage fingers. There is also the possibility that its not hooked up. I have a black wire similiar to the one shown in the picture by joe and its not hooked up. My wire is on the passengers side though.

Here are pics below of my EST wire/connector. It is black/tan. You should find it near the brake booster. That must be disconnected when setting the base timing. Stock base timing is 6* btdc. As far as the 32 degrees of total timing, that is in the chip/tune itself.

If you try to set the timing with the wire still connected, the computer will make adjustments as you are turning the distributor and you will never find your actual base timing.

As far as the hunting idle, I would check the IAC as I mentioned above, but also check for vacuum leaks, which will cause that problem.

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for all the help. I found what I believe is the wire and set the timing to 6 degrees and the car seems to run fantastic. I havnt driven it due to a leaking thermostat housing but I no longer have a floating idle and it seems much stronger. I hope to fix the leak tomorrow so I will let you know how it runs>Still looking for a good tuner though.

Glad to hear you got the timing/idle resolved!

The thermostat housing is a piece of cake. I just use the $.99 felpro gaskets that are sticky on one side, they work the best for me.

Well, work was pretty busy last night lots of shooting and several homicides so I am just getting up. Doesnt look like I am going to get any work done on the car before I have to leave for work again. I thought I would throw in a picture of the car just cause I dont have anything relative to add at this time.
