Alright, I'm 1/2 geek, which is why I've resisted windows Vista and 7 for soooo long. It drives me nuts when they take control of my settings away from me becuase they assume I'm an idiot and can't handle my PC myself.
Sure, make things easier (easier =/= like a MAC), but give me the option to manage my HW drivers, codec installs, etc. Rant over. I bought a new laptop to handle my HD video editing. It's nice, but only came with Win7 and no actual OS disks. Apparently none of them do anymore. Yet another irritant. I frequently have to reinstall my OS, must be the viruses I get from all the...uh...well nevermind that. So finally, intrepid reader, you're reached the question. How do I make an OS disc so I can reinstall back to my computer's virgin state? I have a license key, just need a way to make a Win7 install disk. Help...please...before I start yelling at inanimate objects... |

First off, I recommend AVG free virus, and Webroot Spysweep. Keeps those virus and spybots at arms length.
Secondly, you should be able to order a CD from the manufacturer. I have a more unique problem... my laptop does not have a DVD! I am a geek... but I have found that the more I mess with the internals of Windows, the more frequently I am reinstalling it. I let the OS take care of itself. I do check what gets installed in updates and such, but that's about it. |

I just did this two days ago on my brother's new laptop. I made both a repair disc (takes like 2 mins) and a recovery disc (set of 3 dvds - like 11.7 gb) Takes about an hour or so.
For the first one you go into the menu, then control panel, select security settings, then backup/restore, then select the backup option. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wi ... eate-a-system-repair-disc For the recovery discs (which I think are image discs) I had a sheet from the manufacturer telling me how to do it, but I think it's listed in help, too. Just hit F1 from the desktop and it should come up. Matthew |

This is probably more clear than what I was trying to explain about the differences in the discs.

Sweet I'll check out Matt's link tonight. I want to make a restore point NOW before I start installing anything. So far all I've done is remove the bloatware...like I need Toshiba's sleep manager to control my standby timing.

Never saw a sleep manager on my new T, guess I might look for it. I just did a CD on the repair disc. guess I'll have to buy some DVDs for the restore. |

When I bought my laptop last year right after Christmas, it came with Win7....I too resisted it, for many of the same reasons, anyway mine came right up and told me how to create the recovery disks...which I did after removing the bloatware, 3 DVDs.

Bill, they were just junk programs that the manufacturers put on there and they do nothing but take up room. The manufacturers put much of it on there for the $$$$ that those companies pay to have them on there.
