In a nut shell. How do I do it? The pump and all the other accessories are on the car already... I just got the pulley in the mail today.

There is enough room to install the pulley on a pump in a C3 with everything installed...should be enough room in a C4 too.

Rent the installation tool. It also removes them if the pump has a pulley on it already.

Follow the instructions for both removal and installation.

Upon installation, make sure the pulley lines up perfectly with the other pulleys.

If the tool won't fit with the pump on the car, measure the distance of the pulley from the pump, remove the pump, put it in a vise, and get the new pulley on using the measurement to get it lined up right.

Most important, don't put it on backwards, you'll never get it back off. The small ring that fits the puller faces forward.

With a new pulley, it will go on very hard the first time, easier if you have to do it again.

Mine looks like this, the installer is the bottom pic, note that the surface that pushes against the pulley has a bearing in it that rotates so that it doesn't screw up the pulley face.

This is a "must have" tool especially if you own a LT1. IT's only $25.

autozone and o'rielly has them, too.

I have found that the later LT1 has a slotted ps pulley. It will allow you to sneak around with a flex socket.

Water pump.

I have updated my 92 to the later one sided belt spec. And the one sided belt conversion includes a later ps pulley. That pulley is slotted. Makes reaching the bolt on the WP that much easier.

My bad fot a lack of clarity.

OK, gotch ya.

The first thing I did to my 92 was that conversion.

Funny thing is that I've never played with the w/p bolts without having pulled the pulley. Circumstance, I guess.

Doesn't make sense. I've rented it from autozone and used it myself. It's a puller/installer kit in one made by OEM. It's not two seperate puller and installer kits. Oreilly Advanced and some Pepboys also have tool rentals.

OEM Part# 27031

It's fine if you want to rent things from A-zone.

To me, I figure my time's worth at the min., $20 an hour.

A 1/2 hour to go get it, a 1/2 hour to return it, plus the rental = buying the puller and leaving it in my tool box.

Just sayin'

They also sell every tool they rent wise one. The OEM tool is $30 and if it's not in stock they can get it in about 1 or 2 days with free shipping which is better than going online and waiting two weeks.

Yea, for me, I'd buy it vs 2 trips to the store. If it was a $300 tool, it would be different on the rental deal.

I'm lucky here, Summit's warehouse/retail store is 5 minutes from the house.

Done bragging?

My point being that it's possible that the kit the OP was told was only the puller might just be the #27031 kit that has both, which he can first verify with a simple phone call. If that's the case he can walk in and either rent or buy it outright for $30.

Slow down 86Pacer. I've been a member of this forum for some time and have always found BillH to be extremely helpful and never one to be negative or to brag.

For the original poster. I picked mine up at Harbor Freight and I'm pretty sure I paid under $30 for it.

children...

And yes, it is a common tool available just about anywhere... now, if Pacer can get over his inferiority complex, we will all be happy.

FYI, Summit Racing has stores in Reno, NV, Akron, OH and Tifton, GA (right off the 75 freeway).

FYI - I sometimes rent, and sometimes I buy.

The power steering pulley tool, I bought.

I have used it MANY times on various projects and it's always done the trick with no driving.

Other times I will rent a tool simply because I may not use it again for a few years and I see no need to clog up the garage.

Another big reason to rent over buying, is that their tool turnaround is so high, chances are when you rent it you're getting a fairly new tool. If I bought it, it just gets older and I have to be careful not to abuse or break it.

Just my 2 cents, that in cases like these, it's all about the personal needs and situation.

Cheers.

At autozone, you put a deposit down on the tool when you rent it. Some of the rentals are in bad shape, some look new.

If the tool works right and is worth keeping, then I just don't return it and let them keep the deposit.

Even something cheap may go back to the store if its not something I foresee using in the next 5+ years because of it being for only 1 application. Garage space is limited, and if you end up with so many specialty tools that you don't even remember what you have, you might as well not have it.

Plus I end up at the autoparts store on about a weekly basis anyways, so it's not an extra trip by any means.

You can uhh... "rent" parts from autozone as well for diagnostic purposes.

Yea, what works for you (anyone) is best for you.
I must like clogging up my garage but I need to quit buying big stuff that takes up floor space.
