Anybody have any ideas what would cause a TPI engine to leak raw liquid fuel to from the Evap Canister? Its at its worst after the car has been running at WOT. Got out of the car today and there was a small puddle of fuel under it. Opened the hood and the evap canister is saturated. Appears as though fuel is getting into it somehow and its leaking all over.

yuck.

Car? Is this the firebird thing?

Check the vacuum lines and make sure the fuel pressure regulator isn't puking fuel out.

My guess is the purge solenoid that opens the line and allows fuel vapors to be pulled into the intake and burned, is bad. Since it isn't purging itself of the vapors they condense into raw fuel and eventually filled your canister.

I'm with Dan on this.

Unless the canister/lines are cracked and that should be detectable.

Update:

I decided to drive to work today with the gas cap off. I got on the highway and got on the car hard. Sat in stop and go traffic for a couple minutes, and arrived at work with a dry under carriage and no leaks. I put the gas cap back on when I left and drove to the gas station. When I got out the car was pissing fuel all over the ground from the canister. With the car running I loosened the gas cap which released a significant amount of air... like shaking up a coke bottle and turning and then taking the cap off... What are your thoughts?

There is a pintle valve on the fuel pump assembly. Yours has rusted or gotten stuck. It's not allowing for air expansion or vacuum in the fuel tank.

I once had the vent line that runs from the tank to the canister clogged. I unhooked it near the canister and near the tank and blew compressed air through it to open it up. It caused the tank to build pressure like yours, but....

I still think your vent line and valve on the pump are ok. It is venting to the canister, which is why you are getting fuel leaking out of the canister. The canister doesn't seem to be opening up periodically and venting to the intake to burn the vapors. When you took the gas cap off, it allowed venting to the atmosphere, so no pressure was built at the canister therefore no fuel leaked. I could be wrong, but I still think the problem is a blockage coming out of the canister to the intake, like a block in the line or the solenoid not opening.

Some buildup of pressure is normal. I'd venture to say the EVAP canister is full clogged or the solenoid is bad. I'd really have to read through that section again in the FSM.

Dan, is it sucking air in the tank or blowing it out?

That vapor line connects to the top of the tank. So no matter how much pressure builds in the tank, it shouldn't push gas through there.

Also the fuel cap is supposed to vent if pressure is too high or too low.

What is to high or to low?

And what is the point of the evap system if you have a component (vented gas cap) that allows fumes into the atmosphere anyways?

Good question, which begs the next question, what condition is the charcoal canister in?

Really good question... I have no idea, but I will try and find out tomorrow.

I don't know how to answer this question... It is shot now, I am pretty sure once they become saturated with fuel they are done.

I was reading something interesting online last night, but I don't know if its related. The article I was reading suggested that the purge valve may not open unless the vehicle was at operating temperature. Meanwhile the guy I bought the car around is running around in the middle of the winter with a 160 degree thermostat. Tomorrow my plan was to put a 195*F in which is what I believe it is supposed to have. I will see if it makes a difference and post my results.

Still dodging snow big time. Just when I decide to get myself into a little project we get slammed with snow. My day off is tomorrow so I am going to try and tackle this but I have to be honest I am not all that excited about working outside in the cold and the garage is packed right now.

Meanwhile, I forgot to post at the beginning of the week... I did swap out the thermostat for a 195*F and..........It made absolutely no difference.
