bjz intake runner to brake booster metal hose necessary??

is there any reason why I can't replace the intake runner metal hose that runs to the brake booster with a rubber hose all the way thru?? Metal tube make things difficult when removing the valve covers and what not.

Also I am replacing all of the vac hoses with silicone. If I do some rerouting and let the silicone hose lay on the intake manifold to the egr. Will it melt or be ok?? Thanks.

bjz - Welcome!

What year Vette?

If you replace the metal with rubber, get one for brake boosters. They don't collapse under the vacuum.

A lot will depend on the heat resistance of the silicone. I would think it would be ok, maybe, but only the mfg can confirm that. It would have to be ok with temps of 250F or so.

okay good idea. I will check. I have an 88 with 32,000 miles on it. The car sat for 12 years so I have already replaced the hatch seal, hatch struts, radio, speakers, vac lines, hoses, etc. I have the intake runner off now replacing everything and cleaning everything up. Started with the thermostat and ended up doing everything else. Much easier to work on than my 90 Nissan 300zx.

these are easy cars to work on. That clam shell hood really opens the car up for service.

I haven't worked on a late model Z like that. I did work on the prior gens, the original 240-280Z's are real easy, the first 300ZXs SUCK.

bjz -

Welcome to the site.

Running a 100% rubber hose from the brake booster to the rear port on the plenum is fine. That is how mine is set up. I got the tube from O'Reilly's for about $4.00. The only thing is that the metal tube is attached to the plenum via a nut (can't remember if it's a flare nut or not). I bought my plenum from a guy so I could port it. He removed the flare nut setup and installed a barbed end with epoxy to hook the line to.

As far as the silicone, it shouldn't be a problem AFAIK. Silicon usually has high temp resistance. Just make sure the lines are not too flexible (ie collapse) under pressure, even though there's not too much vacuum in those small lines.

Any reinforced rubber hose will do fine to the booster. The smaller vacuum rubber ines aren't even reinforced.

Silicone generally can take a ton of heat without burning or melting. It will get soft though and easier to collapse. I've never heard of silicone vacuum lines but I'm sure it'd be fine for smaller sizes if the wall is as thick as the rubber ones.

I have used 2, 4 and 6mm vac lines on my Z. Ok I found a 3/8 by 1mm barbed fitting that will screw into the intake runner. So some silicone heater hose and I am set.

I don't blame ya for replacing the EGR... as nasty looking as that is, why risk it failing, having to dig into that mess.

Ask CentralCoaster, he has a listing of all the bolts needed to remove those nasty assed torx heads with allen head bolts.

I suggest an OEM AC Delco unit. I replaced the EGR with a cheap, parts store brand on a suburban not too long ago and the valve simply wasn't good enough. (barely improved emissions test results and still failed). Replaced that EGR with an OEM unit (which cost 3X more than the cheap one) and it passed easily.

I think I bought my new oem delco from rockauto. It's still in the box. Won't fit yours though as 85 is different.
