I approached a traffic light, red, two nights ago. I came up to, and before I completely stopped it flashed twice. I then stopped as I had intended, then turned right and moved on.
Did I just get a ticket?

You have to be in the intersection when the picture is taken. Ours here in town will flash sometimes without someone running it. Just wait, you'll find out for sure.

Or, it was taking a picture of someone else.

I doubt it would flash prior to your entry into the intersection. My guess? Someone going another direction tripped it and it was getting their rear plate.

As you describe it, you hadn't even approached the intersection to commit a crime yet, let alone actually break a law!!

I hope so, I was in a truck and I was doing just wanting to make a right turn, so there is no way in Cali. that I would run a light. Here you need to check to make sure there is no traffic for miles, just to be safe.

Oh, yea... traffic is killer around here.

You can make right turn on red, but you must come to a complete stop. Unless otherwise noted, tho. Some intersections don't permit RTonR.

Some of the cameras work on the premise that they "assume" you are going to run the light - they detect this either by motion or sensors in the lane...then they preemptively take the photo just in case. It doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a ticket.

I bet that is what happened. As I completely stopped at the line at a slight angle.

I live near one of these and it flashes all the time whether or not you run the light. It's very distracting too. They must end up with a lot of pointless photos to sort through.

Someone else here said they received a ticket recently from the camera for turning right on red without stopping completely. I don't know how images can capture that, but someone else said they disputed one and they were given a video to review. I had no idea they did video.

Take some notes on it before you forget the details. One of many things I hate about these is you don't get the ticket until well after the occurrence, which makes it difficult to remember what happened and defend yourself.

Yup, my buddy got one in Chicago. The ticket in the mail is 2 or 3 photos of your car, the plate, etc. Then there is a link to an online page with your vehicle committing the violation..like a 5 second video.

Wait... steve you're out of state.

If you get one don't pay it. You never received the ticket. They won't serve you in Hawaii, and you didn't commit the crime until a peace officer serves you.

Worked for my coworker at least with 9 speed tickets in arizona.

Its an integrity issue. Plus it was a fellow Chiefs truck I was driving and he is in Iraq. He asked I drive it as his wife and oldest wont cause it is too large for them to drive.

What integrity is there in paying a camera $300 to take photos of you? If he receives the ticket, he says it isn't him, and he isn't liable for anything.

Its California, I figure someone is going to pay it, and if I am guilty it will be me.
But being Cali, I am sure someone will go after him, his insurance, or something.

I know there's lots of urban myths about this, but my research on his speeding tickets was that you have to be served. And it is not worth the jurisdiction's time to locate and serve you if you are out of state. They send tickets out and most people just pay anyways out of fear, so they don't need to chase down the small % that know better.

Now, being as this will go to an in-state registered owner, changes things. He would either be asked to pay the ticket, or indicate who is driving if it isn't him. I don't believe he's obligated to disclose who it is though. Obviously, if you don't want to get him involved or ask him to do something he's not comfortable with, then just have him ID you and wait for it to show up in the mail and decide then.

Maybe you should borrow my car, I'll never rat you out, I promise!

LOL. A Vette for the next couple weeks would be nice. It definitely would be speeding in your car. And, I can have a letter generated up saying I was never here, ;)

Here is the main problem, when the owner of the truck gets a ticket in the mail, he merely needs to point out that he is not the one driving the truck and the picture is proof of what he states......

Case closed.

Oh, that and the fact that he is not even in the country at the time the charge against him was made.....

There is no way the police can find out who is driving the truck to indict anyone.....
