I followed this forum post which is great
http://domesticmisfits.net/forums/vie ... rvette+steering+clumn+fix
, I screwed up somewhere and now the key turn as if your going to start it but it just turns, till the actual ignition wires stop it (the two whtie wires that connect to it.) I didnt move anything internally, and just after putting the lock plate back on, it wont act like it does when it is going to start (no tension) and I cant go back as if it is going to ACC. Any suggestions? Common problem after doing this?
In picture/post 19 there is the little piece the ignition lock goes into. It is in the same position as there, then the pin that is to the left that will go into the plate lock is.
So, what is out of alignment?
In this photo, I think this may show what isnt hooked up. The ignition switch acuator rod may not be attached to the ignition switch actuator rack?

One more question. There is a wavy washer. It is part of the plate lock and plastic part that goes on underneath the plate lock. Does this wavy washer go between these two. I pulled it all out as one, and got tipped over by my kitty cat. Anyways, the FSM doesnt really say if it goes on top of the plate lock or between the plate lock and the piece underneath the plate lock.

Okay, got her all back together. Still have same problem, as tilt is wobbly. So, new column time? What years will work in this one?

According to the C4 parts microfiche, 90-93 for sure. I'd have to check actual part numbers to see what the difference is between those years and the 94-96 column...

I guess I need to find a place that specializzes in these things. I am sure if I find a wrecked one, it will be iffy. But if it is super low mileage wrecked...

H@ly $h!t. The warning label would have stopped me cold. I've done my 91 jeep tilt column a few times. I'll look at a few other places, If I come up with something I'll let you know.

Google GM Tilt columns, there's a whole lot of stuff out there. It looks like the picture you have is the same as the El Camino. One guy assembled his with the key in reverse, that's to say that he has to turn his key towards himself to start. There are some places where you can send your column to be rebuilt for $100.00+

Thanks, I will research GM tilt columns. The sad thing is if you buy it, and its not put together right. Shipping is the enemy here in Hawaii.
But if you find or hear of a reputable company that is very good, please let me know. Thanks again. Steve
ps. How about welding the tilt solid, so it wont be an issue!!!

Okay, riddle me this.
If I replace the tilt pins and the little stuff that comes with the repair kit, they go in tight, as I had to tap them in, yet the column still wobbles. And I can jerk the steering wheel down to my lap very easily. Is there something within the actual tilt lever unlocking mechanism that can go bad?
GM sells the columns new, for 1400 bucks, and 354 dollars for eh housing. OUch

It could be the base, the part that mounts to the column is loose or the locking mechanism, the tilt lever, is not completely locking into place? Hmmmmmmm, try pushing the lever towards the dash, then try pulling the wheel down. You say that the column wobbles? does it wobble at the pivot point? or the column?

I pshed the tilt lever as far forward as I could and it was still able to pop out and down. I think the housing is just bad. It wobbles at the pivot point.

I found the parts needed, I believe, will confirm later.
Why cant we just dril out the area that keeps getting worn in the support/housing area where the pins go through, and put real good bushings?

Well I got my parts coming. The guy that did this column back in mid 90's has all the parts, and is a good person. Anyways, the part the dealer has is in the mid 300's. Well he sold me that part and the support for 200.
I am going to modify the old one by having my machine shop I work at put some super wammy dammy bushing material, so if anything wears it will be the pins, not the housing. They said they can drill out the housing and support, secure the bushing in so the pin is snug, like its suppose to be.
So, when this happens I will do a write up with pics etc.
The housing and support are just pot metal. So, we'll see.

Oh Hell yeah post pictures when you get done! I've got a 96 with just a wee bit of slop. Not looking forward to repairing that. Post up detailed pictures of the new bushings & maybe some dimensions. I'm sure this is a common problem and your courageous efforts into the fiery pit of Hell will benefit us all. Salud

What I will do is take the old one out, measure the applicable parts/holes etc. I will measure and ensure everything is/looks sailor proof!
Might be a couple weeks.

As I said in an earlier post, I've worked on my loose, Jeep Wrangler tilt column and that was a days worth of time getting it repaired. No doubt that this one would be a real b@ll buster. Although I thought getting my window motor was going to be tough, and it was until I had to take the door apart about five times to get it right. Good luck and keep us posted.

Okay , got the parts in. Yeah for me. Well I got to the point where I can get the support out. In the picture provided, #59 in Figure 25 needs to be taken out so I can remove the steering support #62, as the fat end doesnt fit through the housing so it can be removed.

Jeeeeez, that sounds like a delightful repair - good luck! If that doesn't do the trick, it might be time to call Gordon Killebrew.

I cant see paying him for what seems to be a easy repair. Why easy, because its a CHEVY
I think there is one bolt holding the shaft in place. The FSM shows it, but I cant see how one bolt can hold that in? Hopefully someone will chime in,.

Well, I got the shaft out, via taking the column out and just removing the lower parts in the drawing slowly. I will never do this in the car again, knock on wood, as its so much easier out fo the car.
I will be putting it al back together in the next few days.

Okay, it is all back together. Steering wheel is tight, and very nice.Feels like new.
The only issue is the turn signal is a little tight to operate. It works, just tighter than before. Might be wires from the turn signal harness in wrong position. I will look at it later, but for now its like a new car.
Next up, my ball joints and bushings from VBandP.

Good job!
Now do an extensive write up on it and post it in the tech section, I may be doing it myself.
