Gage inoperable, but no code. Digital gage works fine.
Replacement instructions suggest a 'sealant' on the sensor threads.
Is teflon tape an acceptable sealant?

Probably not what GM had in mind (more likely a Permagasket type sealer).

I've used this for many years, many different applications and have always had good results.

The analog sensor is more informational... That's why no code. This sensor is on the right head, between the last 2 cylinders. Also check the wiring there.

The digital sensor also feeds data for the ECU. If it fails, you get a code. This sensor is on the waterpump.

Big help, Andy....... have been studying the FSM & Chilton manuals, and the only coolant temp sensor identified is located below the water pump. I'm familiar with the sensor you mention... between 6 & 8 cyl., but can't confirm what sensor it is. Pulled the cap off to check the wiring, and all I can confirm is the wire is attached to the cap.

My coolant sensor arrives Monday, and don't need to replace the digital, and still have the analog not working.

Are the digital and analog the same sensor? There is only one coolant sensor listed in the catalogs reviewed.

As noted digital gauge is fed from the ECM which gets it's temp indication from the coolant temp sensor on water pump

The one on the water pump is two wire and called a sender or sensor if I remember rightly. The one on the cylinder head is one wire and again if my memory is good it is called a switch.

FSM shows coolant sensors for ECM & gage next to each other on the front....

So am I, Andy....... pic is from my '92 fsm.

Anyway, found the correct analog sensor from Eckler's. Have a spare
digital sensor now.

No need to research sensor part numbers.

Thanks, Andy

You're right, Bill... That is ZR1! It looks old L98 for a moment.

Don - be sure when you are sifting through the manual that you are on "ENGINE VIN P". The VIN J is for the ZR1. VIN P is LT1.

I am aware of the vin P & J difference, but need to be reminded.

Thank you.
