So there are two schools of thought on this. Some prefer to mount in in the trans pan / exit line to monitor actual (?) trans temps. Some prefer to mount it to the return line to verify the cooler is functioning.

When I spoke to Dana, he told me to put the trans gauge sensor on the return line after the cooler.

Autometer instructions recommend mounting the manifold on the radiator inlet line (hence, trans exit line)

No matter what website you look at, guys have opinions on both sides of the fence. And I see the benefits of both arguments.

So does anyone have their own gauge installed and where did you install it (and why did you do it that way)?

I believe you're over thinking this, Matt. It's just not that super, super critical.

The pan, the lines will do fine.

I have mine at the rear of the pan for that reason
I know the cooler is working because when the trans cooler fan kicks in I can see the temp drop almost straight away

I just use the stock trans temp readings.
I bet the FSM for a later c4 would show a decent location for a sensor.

I just checked my 96 manual... and from what I can figure, the sensor is in the pan somewhere.

There is no factory temp sensor on the 700r4s, I believe that came in when they went to electronically controlled transmissions.
