I will keep searching!

There are some fusible links in use on the 1995s. Trust me I smoked one during my first head cam swap. IIRC they are back behind the battery under the fuse block.

I try to plan far enough in advance to use GM parts (hopefully Old NOS parts) If I need it now and its something that's hard to replace IE more than 20 minutes work. In order I'll try NAPA, CARQUEST/O'REILLYs/Pep Boys and then Autozone/Advanced.

Seems like Napa still tries to sell First Quality Parts, so does Carquest. I used to hit O'REILLYS first but over the last few years it seems like they are slipping into the AUTOZONE/ADVANCED level of quality.

As for the lower tier autoparts sold by the big chains it seems like Tommyboy said it best; "They know all they sold you was a guaranteed piece of shit. If you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. For your customers'-- for your daughter's sake, you might want to buy a quality product from me."

In my opinion Formula 1 kicks Indy's ass. Seems like now that the cars are all cookie cutter its lost its appeal to me, it was like watching NASCAR (cars mostly the same with stickers to make them different). I used to love Indy and NASCAR. Oh well hopefully the Australian Supercar series hits it big here, then I'll have F1 and the supercar series to watch. It would be good if Chrysler, gets involved in the supercar series with the Charger....

I already had a quote on the part from Vette2Vette of $23 so I didn't want to bother Dino. I think I have met him at Corvette shows and he is an intense dude who does not like to put up with people wasting his time.

Thanks Boats I will just buy Andy's.

I was suggesting you buy Andy's, however, he was asking for fair market value hence the suggestion to call Dino for a price.

In the navy BOATS is used almost exclusively for

BOATSWAINS Mates

Boatswain Mate is an honorable profession and one of the oldest ratings in the Navy; however, I was a BOATGUY, commonly known as SWCC, more commonly known as DBG (dirty Boat Guy) A short while ago a rating for boatguys was established (SB) and prior to the rating establishment I was an EM, so I do not rate the term boats....

However, thanks for the complement brother, even though I don't rate it.

Did you try Dino's. He's up the road from me in the swamp. I haven't been by his place in a long while but he always seems to have DOZENS of complete corvettes and and a AZZ-ton of donors in the back.
If you call him he may be able to give you fair market price of the part so that you'll know what to offer Andy.

did you talk to your machinist. IMO letting the guy doing the machine work make the recommendations on materials he's preparing is a GOOD THING>

That said I'm a fan of the Mahle forged pistons and their ring set for the aforementioned forged pisotns. IMO 7000 rpm shortblock is the easier part, valvetrain choices are going to be crucial for engine longevity at 7+K rpm

I removed my spare tire carrier years ago. Do you guys think I'm trapping more air under the rear of the car because of that?

What are the odds of picking up some top end by reinstalling the spare tire carrier?

Will,

I don't know if I could get out of the driveway with a lower spoiler. But that could be a good option.

I just wish that someone had the data on drag reduction using XXX body kit or XXXX wing.

Wow,you did a lot of work to install your converter.

I'm running a Vig 3500 and according to the factory transmission temp reading my operating temps are good with just a plain old B&M 70264.

I left the factory cooler in the loop too, seems like it may have helped lower my engine coolant temps too.

there are things you can do for lower drag, some of which also reduce what down force you already have

I've actually worked on land speed Bonneville cars
I've also word on a car that did 85mph on 5hp (electric)

You need to take a look at the rules as to what you can do
you're better of with a more aerodynamic coupe

Here a Bonneville C4 ZR-1 that did 224mph

http://m.corvetteforum.com/c4-zr-1-di ... e-project-up-date-23.html

Brian,
I'd like to decrease drag without reducing my current down force

The only rule is it has to retain its street manners.

The way its set up now my daughters used to drive it to high school every now and again. (they've been out of high school for years) I have no issue jumping in and driving a thousand or so miles. So Ron, Phil, Brian, and Ed have given me a reliable powerful combination.

But I want more and If I'm asking too much of a C4 it may be time to move on.

However, I believe undercar air management might be the answer. Even Z4 bimmers have belly pans and they are butt slow...

Well... this is a good question.

Aero mods are not really designed to make you go faster, they are designed to make you stick to the road better... which increases cornering speeds and stability.

And F1 car so much downforce, that the drag is killer! The act of letting off the gas has the effect of 1g worth of braking.

If you want faster, then you need to think about drag removal... Lowering the front end, deeper front air deflectoers, some kind of REAL rear diffuser, a real rear wing that will push the car down in the back.

You will also have to get rid of the air in the front. A high rise hood will help with that.

And if done wrong, you will slow down...

Aero control is as much about moving air, but where you want to move the air too.

Having listened to a lot of Doug Fehan's presentations over the years, they get aero advantage when they can improve cornering speed and such...

There are some good books are aero considerations... I will check my library for titles.

Bogus,

I figured out the benefits of dropping the car years ago. My car has been LOW for about 8 years, and the drops were performed after miles of high speed driving back when I was stationed in Colorado. Dropping the car and messing with the rake until the car was stable at speed.

I also removed all of the rubber bushings early in my ownership (ordered an energy suspension polygraphite kit the first month of owner ship)
AI heads within the first 4 months.... (3 sets of AI heads ago I should have went big first time around LOL)

BillH wrote:
For high speed Mike?

First I have to ask (no offense), How often do you plan to go over 130?

Kudos for wanting to improve your car but the areo stuff doesn't work without doing the whole package. I.E.. putting an air dam or spoiler on the front will reduce the air going under the car but it will also increase drag,
And putting just the spoiler on will have the affect on the rear of taking weight off (stability loss).

Are you looking for faster MPH at a given RPM or are you looking for stability at higher speeds?

If it's stability, work on the suspension, you'll get way more bang for the buck.

The areo stuff that's out there isn't going to do much, doubtful that you'll even be able to notice the difference.

An example would be my 92, soft, base suspension with KYB's.
I run 125 on the straights, tap the brake and turn into S-bends at 110-115. The car floats a lot, a lot.
Areo mods won't help that at all, suspension mods will.

Bill,

I frequently find myself over 155 mph.... and rarely over 170. I'd like to change the later. My car is stable and rides nice at speed. However, drag is a major factor at 160+ and IMHO reducing drag may have bigger effect on top-speed than another 50-100 horsepower. I'm looking for drag reduction, while not making the car unstreetable.

So what I'm looking for is drag reduction

That wont increase lift and will allow the car to continue to be my daily driver.

It may be that I'm maxed out on DD driven well mannered C4 performance and it may be time to move on. I sure hope that's not the case

I hope the guru's have the information I seek

I'm looking for proven aerodynamic improvements .
Since this is for my daily driver I'm not looking for mods like mirror removal and racer-taping seams..

I just want to go faster..

Thanks

One other tip is I place a couple of rags over the rockers and remove the rag from the pair I'm adjusting, replace rag and move on. Seems to keep oil off of my headers, and as previously mentioned with the alternator off it only takes a couple of minutes per side.

Nice looking 58, IDK if I agree that its better looking car than the 55 and 56. I agree 58 an evolution of the 57.

Over the last couple of decades USAA has been good to me. As for a replacement car. It depends which part of my fleet got totalled. If it was the vette I'm leaning towards not replacing it. The G8 is coming up on the end of its warranty in 2014. So I may just throw the money on pedders suspension parts, AI heads and cam and maybe a maggie (if there's money left over). If I take the G8 I'd have to find something for the wife. Every now and again she's asked about a C6 maybe a C7 would be in the works.
If it were the G8, I'll be checking out the Holden that Chevy is going to sell. I really wish GM would make a car like that here. I love the CTSV but when I'm in the driver's seat there's no leg room in the backseat.

Looked like a nice car, pretty color. I'd hate to be the driver. I'm sure that the proffessional test driving community is pretty small so the driver is taking crap from his peers.

If its anything like my community folks thousands of miles away were talking about it before the car stopped moving.

Seems to me that the stock balancer only fit on the hub one way due to the layout of the hub arms.
Since I didn't want any issues at 7,000+ rpm I ditched the stock balancer I went with a keyed ATI damper.

The Brian Ebert balanced rotating assembly doesnt hurt longevity either.

The original shop may have done nothing wrong. I seem to recall a couple years ago comp cams switched to a different supplier for their 918 behives and there were a bunch of failures.

Glad to hear youre ok. Sorry for the loss of the jeep. Seems like the insurance companies total vehicles pretty easily, vice fixing them.

SORRY FOLKS here comes Aboatguy rant!
.

It seems like a majority of LTX internet gospel could be wrong. I read all over the internet that in order to run roller rockers and headers LT4 knock sensor module was required, optisparks disolve when wet, stock pcm maxes out around 6800 etc et al and all of that information was false. I know its false since I've been running all stock LT1 ignition sensors and PCM and hitting 7000 plus rpm in my 1 to 1 gear (Drive in my 4l60E) for YEARS.

Then theres the 4L60E OBDI stall wall which turned out to be another non-issue(at least on my build and Ed Wright tuning).
And my favorite the all weekend spark plug and wire change. I know for a fact that a single person can get up early in the morning, remove the engine place it on an engine stand, work on it for a few hours and still be driving before dark only using a helper for two 15 minute sessions. How can a competent back yard mechanic take so much longer to change plugs than it takes R/R an engine?

So who knows what is really true. Now when I have questions I take what I read on the web and often in the FSM with a grain of salt and if I'm truly stumped on an engine issue I call Ed Wright, or Phil and Ron at AI and they have never let me down.

So what common LTX gospel have you found to be false.

Pretty sure the 96 knock sensors are not compatible with earlier year ECM/PCMs. I am positive the LT4 sensors are one year only, not sure about LT1 sensors.

I have no experience with them, but read that the LT4 is less sensitive because GM put in roller rockers, etc, and it seems to be a common upgrade when changing to noisier components:

I believe the LT4 has a different knock sensor module that is less sensitive. Concur with the 96 knock sensor incompatablity with OBDI PCMs

I concur with Mathew, Will and Brian

A truth about performance is

Reliable, Cheap, Fast, choose two.

In my experience on a performance modification project, research and come up with your projected budget, then double it and you may end up close. Modififying older vehicles always brings up a couple of unexpected Oh-shits and Oh buy the ways. If you search the internet the double the estimate often happens to folks that use professional shops...They'll take their car, bike, boat to a shop; get an estimate and next thing they know is the price is skyrocketing.

For a mild 355 build with decent parts figure 5-6K and don't be surprised to have to spend another 2k or so on your driveline.

Good luck.

I like driving my vette more than wrenching on it for wrenchings sake; so if my damper was unmarked I'd find top dead center.

I can think of numerous quick/easy and effective ways to find TDC. pulling valve cover and watching number 1 cylinder rockers and then using blunt object in the no 1 spark plug hole is one method and ensures your on the firing stroke too) finger over spark plug hole until you feel compression and then use the object in the spark plug hole is a quick and dirty method to find TDC on compression stroke, or simply use my piston stop (since compression stroke really doesnt matter IRT to marking the damper) then I'd mark the damper and use my timing light.

Any of these methods would show if you had the opti indexed incorrectly, in much less time than pulling the opti and having an opportunity to mis-index the opti.

Good luck Andy. You are close to having it running.
