I was at the local u-pick-it lot... they have a 96 Firebird Formula come in... 6spd car, 142k miles.

The motor is toast (it does not run), but the block is supposed to be good. I suspect it is electrical in nature as to why it quit... or a spun bearing... who cares.

all I want is an LT1 core. And I can have this with all accessories and such for $500.00. I am thinking that some of the accessories can be resold to aborb the cost of the engine - intake, fuel rails, alternator, starter, etc...

I know they are not gold, but gee...

My long term plan is for a 383 stroker... the Fbody LT1 is begging for splayed main caps.

Thoughts?

You know, If we didn't have that great divide between us, I'd go in 50/50 for the tranny setup. (I'm assuming you'd have to purchase the whole motor/tranny assembly)

grab it and hold on to it. LT1 blocks are one of kind. Sure they made a tremendous amount of them, but that's not a bad deal. If you can get the harness and PCM, even better.

I think he knows that. He stated it's "begging for splayed main caps"

Good LT1 blocks are getting harder and harder to find.

They will go the route of the 400 block eventually. Most will be pricy and worn out. If you find a deal on one now, grab it. Bogus, Pomona swap meet is Sunday, Ill keep an eye out for you on one. Cunningham is looking for one, too .
Go for the 2 bolt and splay it. A 4 bolt with good main bolts or studded isnt a bad thing either.

This is where rare does not equal valuable.

All I need is an engine to start a build on. I don't need the rest of the car.

that's my thinking entirely.

I may take some time and clean up the garage... then I can get the motor in here and get it torn down, sell off the extras and store just what I need... the bare short block!
