Question guys. My 85 needs new injectors. I do have the FSM but was wondering how hard of a job this is and can it be done over a weekend or two? Also any tricks I should know about that may make it easier. What would be the best ones to use for replacement? And if this helps, there are no mods on the car.

Thanks

Mike

Why do you think it needs new injectors?

Anyhow, I sent mine to Rich at Cruzinperformance.com and he refurb'd and flow tested them for about $100. You'll have to wait for turnaround time though. He spoke highly of the 85 injector design. Some of the replacements don't have a good track record.

Pulling the runners is tricky, the lower torx bolts are tough to get. You'll need a T-40 bit and some wobbly extensions. There's a bolt going into each runner from the backside. Cold start injector is a bitch, it has to come off first.

You may need to do some gasket scraping on the uppers, if it's never been off before. Also buy an upper intake gasket set, it should have everything you need.

If your throttle body still has the coolant hooked up to it, now is a good time for a throttle body bypass.

Also you may have to pull the belt tenstioner off and loosen the a/c compressor bracket and pull it forward in order to get the fuel lines disconnected from the rail.

Valve covers do not need to come off.

Why do you think it needs new injectors? When the plugs were changed a few were fuel fouled. They are original. From the records that I have from previous owners they were only had a fuel injections cleaning service done once.

I also have an '85, 120k miles, and the injectors had never been serviced. I took them out and sent them to Cruzin' this past January, it took Rich about a week, and I had them back. I am very, very pleased with Rich's service, and the cost is a fraction of replacements.

As for removing/reinstallation......if you're handy at all, it's not too difficult. Just take your time and follow Centralcoaster's advice, and it'll be worth it. I also took the opportunity to clean/paint some things, and bypassed the heater hose/throttle body. If I can do it, most anyone could.

Can't you get new Ford blue tops for about $240?

Those rebuilds won't be any better than what you get from Rich.

I used one vendor I was VERY disappointed in.

This guy bailed me out:
http://fuelinjectorconnection.com/shop/

I really reccomend them. Best service EVER.

There are two kinds of injector. Pintle and Disk. There are two manufacturers of Disc. Standard and Bosch.

Standard is the OEM for TFS, Holley, Accel (new ones), Racetronix, and other Disc style injectors. All are of equal quality.

I just got a set of Bosch (Ford) 25.2# flow matched set from Jon at FIC for $150. they are "rebuilt".

The original set I purchased on line were supposed to be 37 pounds and were stamped 40. I am having them flow tested before I shoot off my mouth about where they came from.

Suffice it to say that I would not buy anything on the internet from anyone that takes paypal and does NOT have a contact phone number or address.

Ford injectors are made by Bosch and are very good injectors.
