Not in the car yet, but I am building a new 406 for 2007. Block is being machined as I type.
I can't wait

that's a lot of motor.

is the block a seasoned SBC or a new casting? Aluminum or factory iron?

What heads? Crank?

I will be using a "vintage, seasoned" .030 block,
Scat cast crank, 5.7 rods and sealed power hyper pistons.
Cam is a custom ground comp hydraulic roller.
Compression will be about 10.9 to 1
Ran a similar combo in 05 but the block had an internal crack we did not find during the magnaflux process. I burnt the main bearing and blackened the crank on the dyno. Made decent power before it died though. I believe it was 445 hp and 490 ft lbs of torque. Should be a bit more fun than my current 383.
I do alot of projects for others, nice to have one going for myself. :thumbright:

2 bolt or 4 bolt main?

sounds like some seriously honest power, but not so much as to make things tempermental.

EFI or carb?

I am going to use the same parts that are on my 383.
Edelbrock ported heads
Hooker super comps w/true duals
Super ram
all will be switched.
Current combo runs 116.50 in the 1/4.
Hope to run 11.70 @118 after I figure everything out. Should be a fun project

Block is completely machined and ready to be cleaned, painted and cam bearings installed. All will be done by me. Crank is in and scheduled to be balanced by tuesday. Pistons are likely fitted to the rods, or will be soon. Sounds like I will have everything a couple days before christmas..
I won't have an chance to do final assembly before february or march, but look forward to assembling it. It should rock and roll
I have to disassemble and go through my daughters NHRA Junior Dragster in order to be ready for opening day in march. Already have a few sponsors lined up for it. Things are coming together nicely for 07.

I brought some stuff home yesterday. Blocks look fantastic when they are shotpeened. I oiled it down with wd-40 after bolting it up to the stand. I have alot on my plate currently and will not be able to assemble it for a few months.

I pulled the trigger and ordered a brand new set of the AFR eliminator cylinder head. Now it may really rock and roll

Yes it is. Factory 400 block with a .030 overbore. Special pistons with 350 connecting rod (5.700 length)
The factory 406 rods were 5.56. The 5.700 rods are easily available, cheap and result in a better rod/stroke ratio than the 5.65 rods.
Decent, inexpensive package that works well.

I know of 2 guys that have built motors based on that 400 block. Sounds like you're gonna have a big cube torque monster when you're done!

Keep us informed!

I may have a bigger project yet for 08. I have a friend that was going to build a 406 also. He has much more money in his block due to adding splayed 4 bolt main caps. I believe he has $1,300 invested. He has decided to bail out of it and wants to sell me the block, a set of $500 forged pop up pistons and a solid roller cam(both pistons and rods are brand new in the box) for $800.
I presume I can e-bay the pistons and cam to recoup $400 of the $800 spent. If it happens, I plan to begin aquiring a 3 7/8 stroke crank. The result will be a 420 cube monster. For the price, I have to buy it.
I have a couple of 383 stroker engines laying around. I may freshen those and sell them to fund the build up.

If AFR delivers on time, I should have my new heads in 2-4 weeks. :thumbright:
I purchased the roller lifters last week.
The only things left to purchase is:
head gaskets
intake gaskets
header gaskets and collector gasket.
Not sure if I am going to drop it in after the snow melts, or if I should start and finish the LT 1 conversion and change up the whole package.
Decisions, decisions......

Heads arrived yesterday. After a 13 week wait, I was happy to see the brown truck arrive. I was less than thrilled with the quality of the heads though
