Read the recent post on the 84 no start issue, but the 87's seem different enough I need some direction...
Son's 87 automatic coupe...
No prior starting trouble (other than battery was FUBARED at end of winter layup and replaced)
New, good battery, fully charged.
Good connections.
All courtesy lights come on when door opened.
Turn key (in Park) a few relays click, a/c clutch engages, no crank, no noise from starter.
Put vette in Neutral, no different.
Play w/ shifter in various gears ( suspecting Neutral Safety Switch), still no crank in Start.
Tried different VATS keys suspecting a bad resistor, no difference.

Need guidance....
Bad Neutral Safety Switch (which I am guessing is in console)
Bad VATS?
Bad ignition switch?
Some other theft deterent system haywire?

What about the starter? It could have a bad bendix or failed solinoid.

As annoying as that would be...

I would also be 100% sure the connections to the starter are good.

For me, it doesn't sound like a VATS issue... at least not yet.

When you turn the key, do the lights dim? If not, then it's VATS.

Factory Service Manual, Electrical Diagnosis section, locate and follow the chart for a no crank condition.

I have had my hand on starter when key is turned to Start and there is nothing felt...
Headlights do NOT dim when key is in Start.

Can you hear the fuel pump prime for 2-3 seconds when you turn key on? If so, VATS is not the problem. Turn radio off and listen very carefully.

Joel

Hold on, I'm thinking of the injector pulse not pump. I'll have to recheck on pump not running. Sorry

just as an off chance, the starters on the 87's are fairly easy to reach, try giving the starter a good solid rap with a hammer, the reason being the brush's may not be making contact ( but would think you would still hear the bendex engage ) if it then starts, new starter time ( they are cheap and common. The blow of the hammer will cause the brush's to set.

Well as im noticing more and more these days, people dont seem to apreciate information presented to them, whether it helps or not.

Whether or not it seemed extraneous to you, if one day you were interested to know what vehicles came with a Delco 10MT starter motor, had i not posted, youd have had to look it up. Sure, youd have found the info, but not like as if i did you a dis service by telling you.

Now i dont really know for sure, but just by the tone of your post, i dont get the feeling youre being too polite. In fact i get the impression youre telling me my assistance is not wanted in any way, shape, or form.

So due to that theory i have, i think maybe if i dont offer any assistance, then i probably wont have to worry about people not apreciating it.

Some people apreciate efforts made by others, some people dont. Some people can apreciate a bit of a joke, some people just cant.

I think over the past few years ive given alot of my free time to people that dont apreciate it. Am i obliged to do so? Most certainly not. Did i put myself out to get you that info? You bet your arse i did. Why did i? Cause i thought you might like to know.

So what do you reckon?

jeez children.

As for the lights not dimming. That is very important. Even a mildly screwed starter will draw SOME current. If the starter has been totally disconnected from the equation, as with a VATS issue, then guess what - ZERO DRAIN.

The list is very useful. No question. It's always nice to know cross-references.
