Well, as mentioned previously, I am planning on doing my exhaust. Here are my projected ideas:

Hedman Hedders:
http://store.summitracing.com/partdet ... ?part=HED%2D68448&FROM=MG

Magnaflow mufflers and rear y-pipe (package-cheaper on another website, but just for reference):
http://store.summitracing.com/partdet ... ?part=MPE%2D15658&FROM=MG

High flow cat (3") - brand not determined, but probably Carsound

Front y-pipe - muffler shop fabricated - 2.5"

I will do the header install myself. I plan on having the O2 sensor bung welded into the reducers that come with the headers and adding a heated O2 sensor. I cannot do the metal fabrication myself, so I intend to have a muffler shop do it and then hang everything.

Thoughts on this system? Pros/Cons?

Matthew

Why not ditch the cat and have them run dual 2.5s back to the mufflers and stick a X pipe in there? Cost would probably be about the same.

I thought about that. My reasons for not are twofold. First, I prefer to have a cat, just a personal choice. If I ran duals, I'd have to buy two, plus an x-pipe. Second, those magnaflow mufflers only come as a package with the y-pipe. I emailed magnaflow and they said nope, mufflers aren't sold separately. The guy gave me the number of some generic universal fit, but it doesn't have the tips on it, etc, and by the time you add it all up the price is almost the same.

I just was wondering if anyone else had a similar set-up. My motor is stock for now, so I am not expecting any spectacular transformation, but it's a start. I need new mufflers anyway - mine is rusted through...lol.

Thanks,

Matthew

I would suggest using a LT1 type design.

And Magnaflow doesn't sell mufflers anymore? damn.

Click here for my theory on L98 exhaust upgrades.

I just saw a new 86-91 Random Tech cat for $200 on that other forum.

Magnaflow doesn't sell that particular muffler in a single package. The tech support gave me a "universal fit" number but it's not the same.

The LT1 mufflers are 3" inlet, the L98 are 2.5". Will LT1 style work on my car? It's just the hangars that are different, correct? Are they better? Easy to swap?

the hangers are easy to get. cheap, too. www.vette2vette.com is a great source.

I am not suggesting using LT1 mufflers... but someone makes one that will work.

2.5" is more than enough for what you are doing. Hell, 2.5" will support a lot more than what you are doing!

Probably a easy quiestion but what is so good about the LT1 exaust that makes it more desirable than aftermarket ones. Is it that it's more free flowing AND still a stock appearance/sound or...???

lemme guess, you never read the link I posted?

If you had, you wouldn't be asking that question.

Click here to get to the post that has the link.

THEN ask your questions.

I know the 2.5 is even overkill, but I like the look of those mufflers. If I could get another similar muffler I would just do true duals - it would probably be easier. That, a couple bullet cats, and an x pipe and I'd be done. But like I said, magnaflow is a bunch of tards and they don't have those mufflers alone without the x-pipe.

yea, but the x-pipe is what makes the exhaust special. It will lower resonance and improve performance.

Trust me, with a C4, you will love an x-pipe - and you would HATE true duals.

I mistyped. I meant they don't sell it without the "y" pipe. I will probably run the dual setup with an x pipe. I need to find some different mufflers now. Back to my search.....

I've never ever seen/read any before/after comparisons on Xpipe installs on the LT1, so I'm not sure what the benefit is other than sound tone.

If you check the article here, (top half of links), it's by David Vizard, and by no coincidence his recommendation is almost spot on for the factory LT1 exhaust system, and also dispells some common myths. If you read it you'll already know more than most of the people on this board.

http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/track/6992/vizard.html

Although I think 2.75 is too big for a L98. Plus it's hard to find.

If you look at the Magnaflow mufflers for the '92 to '96 Corvettes, I believe that they are mufflers only.

Randy's right but the LT1 mufflers use 3" inlets which really is no big deal.

Matthew are you hung up on those tips? Corvette Central has Magnaflow mufflers for the L98 with L98 or LT1 tips on them for like $190 for the pair and no y pipe. It's designed to fit a factory rear y pipe though. We just put these mufflers and a new rear y pipe on an 88. Sounds good but it's quiet, very quiet actually. We have Hooker long tubes, a hooker y pipe, and Random Tech cat waiting to go on. That should make it louder.

I want something that looks nice, that's why I picked those mufflers. I did like the tips, and I want to go with polished stainless. I figured since I'm gonna go 2.5 inches the whole way, why do 2.25 inlet mufflers, ya know? I don't know why this is so difficult for me to piece together.

Once I figure it all out, I'll let you guys know.

Ok what do you guys think about these mufflers?

http://www.hottexhaust.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=14218

Decent prices, it will keep the cost down. I'll end up adding some tips to them. I am just getting frustrated and want to get this over with.
