My '94 Owner's Manual - Section D, Maintenance Schedule - says:

"Manual Transmission Fluid SAE 5W-30 (GM Part No.1052931 or equivalent.)"

Not the same part number as engine oil.

There has been a HUGE debate on this forever lol.

but ZF Doc recommends either using GM Synchromesh (PN 12345349) , or the Castrol TWS 10w-60 you get at a BMW dealer

That part number in the Helm is the old number. It's the same stuff.

Essentially, it is engine oil (which isn't all that abstract these days), but it's a special duty engine oil that works better with the sheering forces within the transmission.

Yep, and 2 years ago the TWS was $22 a quart. I change to TWS at 65k miles and didn't notice a bit of difference, But there wasn't anything wrong with my trans anyway, shifts smooth, etc.

I have found that some BMW dealers really rape folks on that oil. Seriously rape them.

My local BMW dealer hits me about $9.00 a litre.

There's always something like this, which says it meets the original GM specification:

http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/mtf.aspx

P.S. I don't work for or with Amsoil, nor do I sell their products. However, I am an engineer and know that specs are provided for a reason - usually a very good reason.

That GM fluid spec'd in the manual got superceded by Synchromesh.

The synchromesh is made by Pennzoil, available at the auto parts store, or at a GM dealer with a more expensive bottle. GM also has a friction modified and synthetic version available.

Unlike a motor, the manual transmission requires some friction in the fluid for the synchros to work properly.

ZFdoc recommends Castrol TWS 10w60, and not any of the GM stuff.
