I did a little road trip today. I had to drop Bastet44 off at the airport real early (conference to attend) and I then headed to Autobook-Aerobook in Burbank. All was well.

Then headed down to Santa Ana to visit Jack at McJack's Corvette, all was well.

Left McJacks... got on the 22 freeway and the thing just DIED. Made a final pop and quit.

I checked all the fuses, all the connections (running LTCC - the thing that bypasses the high voltage section of the opti) and all seemed fine.

The one thing... fuel pressure was dropping like a rock. It would stay at 45lbs for about a minute, then start to bleed off. It would then fall like a rock to about 30 lbs in no time flat. I could watch the gauge drop... and there were no leaks or smell of raw fuel.

Now, I don't know if you all remember, but my Vette started a neat trick last fall where it would quit on a sharp turn. It stopped as quickly as it started. I clean up the battery terminals, but I don't think that really fixed anything.

I have always suspected the fuel pump... with the dropping pressure, it makes sense.

After about 15 minutes, it restarted. Just that easy. It would crank and then sputter and quit, like it was out of gas! However, I FILLED it Thursday evening and had put only 120 miles on that tank to that point.

I have ordered a new pump, got a new filter and sock, too. As I drove it home, it was just fragile feeling. It just didn't have the snap I expect.

thoughts?

Oh, no codes reported or recorded.

sounds like the fuel pump to me, although a regulator that had a vacuum leak could do similar problems.

I have the TPIS AFPR on it... nice piece. I doubt that is it... but it could be. With that one, you can tear it down and check the diaphram. I will do that later on.

You've been down that defective FPR road before, eh? I know you'll keep us posted. Good luck with it.

yes, you remember well. It was an Accel piece that failed internally. It filled 4 & 6 cylinders with fuel... oh, and the crank case, too.

No damage, tho... thank goodness!

I just did the fuel pump and filter.

The pump went fine... it was the filter that sucked big hairy ones... damn... I hate doing the filter in these cars. I would LOVE to retro fit the system honda uses... the little canister with the banjo fittings. So much less fuel lost in the process, less chances of stuff getting into your eye.

What made matters worse was that my lines are a little tweeked from age, so aligning the filter back up to the line was a biotch.

Another pitfall of living in CA. Long tubes and relocated cats make the fuel filter change so much easier. So did this fix your problems?

I suspect it will help. The new pump is SERIOUSLY quieter than the old one. So much so, I could bearly hear this one start up.

The old one roared even with a full tank... get down to a 1/4 tank, and it commensed to bitching and complaining.

The pump I got came from Autozone, but it's made in the USA.

It was probably noisy because it was about to fail.

I love the smell of shell in the morning

On a more serious note, watch out for gasoline burns.
