OK, this has been annoying me for a while so I want to ask the question.

I am using the new Dart SHP block. Which I posted links to here.

This block uses a 2 piece rear main seal.

Given that this is the OLDER version of the block , and has a reputation of leaking....WHY TF would Dart use a two piece RMS?

Is there any drawback to the 2 piece?

Thanks.

Design of the 2 piece crank flange is supposedly stronger thats why they do it that way.
Dont worry, 1 piece rear main seals leak too. Its a Chevy.

Q: How do you know when your Chevy needs oil?

A: It stops leaking.......

Actually though, I've never had much trouble with two piece seals either. In that respect, it's six of one or half a dozen of the other, IMO.

I have never had a 2 piece rear main seal leak! Here's how to accomplish that, picture the block & main cap separation point at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock. Put the upper seal half in the block with the ends at about 4 o'clock and 10 o'clock. Do the same with the other half in the main cap. When you assemble it just put the two halves together very carefully and you should have a dry rear seal area.

I drove a cab in college. Never had to change the oil, cause it got a new quart every 3 - 4 days. Oh the sound of cars that go bump in the smoke - pedal DOWN!!!!!!!

Went to the gas station to top off, and always got some gas while there!
