Flashing sign said:

"Advise 55 mph curve ahead"

He had to be hauling ass. Well, I can't say for sure what he was hauling, but it didn't make it to the destination.

The camera vehicle drove through it like it was a Nascar wreck. Maybe the crash truck driver was talking with his wife on the phone. Notice that the cab was firmly planted till the top heavy trailer pulled him along for the ride. Death sucks. Stupidity doesn't help.

Hi Guys..
From what I understand the driver only had his CDL 9 days. And the trainer was in the bunk during the accident. I can only hope the trainer was in the bunk maybe checking a map, whatever (not sleeping)but he should have been in the jump seat with a rookie going down Donner.

Haveing crossed Donner many times since '85 this was certainly a reality check for me!!

That's a crazy video. At first I thought the video guy was just gonna drive through it until he pulled over....eek.

Any idea who the guy who shot the video was or even why he was shooting it? Kind of random, huh?

Just shows you how quickly something terrible can happen. Imagine if you were in a car next to that truck when it flipped....and of no fault of your own.

A truly sad event.

Donner Pass is a magnet for stupid drivers. I drive it probably 20 times a year, have to use it to get to the Ca. racetracks.
It's sad about the dricers.

Only half the trucks pay attention to that flashing sign and none of the cars do.

In the dry it's bad enough but when it's snowing.........
A bunch of years ago I picked up a new company car in San Jose, started up the summit - snow flurries, close to the top - 3 inches of snow, at the top some flatlander spun in front of a big rig causing 2 of them to flip.
I sat there watching it snow for 9 1/2 hours. It piled up to 3 1/2 feet (over the outside mirrors). I came awake with an eight foot diameter snow blower one foot from the car.
Fun trip.
I did find out that a car can idle for 9 1/2 hours on 3/8ths of a tank of gas.

BTW - Every curve on Donner can be taken in the dry at 70mph easily even when towing a 20 foot Featherlite

Hi Matthew

As far as the guy driving through it..In my opinion he did an exellent job. Driving through the smoke then pulling off the road way past the accident so as not to cause another. Cudo's to that driver!!

From what I hear it was a Walmart driver doing the video but that doesn't make sense to me as you can see the front of the truck and it's red. Walmart trucks are white. Could have been another carrier, like maybe Crete pulling a Walmart trailer, I don't know!!

Lots of guys are using dash cams these days to protect themselves in an accident. You know someone is involved in an accident with a big truck claiming the big truck is at fault when the dash cam shows a different story. Actually we are due new trucks and the Company I work for is contemplating putting dash cams in all the new trucks.

As far as being next to the truck....Yup that would certainly suck. Just really be aware of your surroundings when you are out there!!

Be careful guys

Oh, I agree 100%. I was just saying from the video it seemed for a second he wasn't going to stop....he did the right thing by pulling over *after* the accident.

A dash cam in trucks makes sense. Could be that.

I've had a few close calls with truckers, but in general, I like to think they're better trained than 99% of the other drivers on the road. And just like a bus driver, it takes more room for them to get around, so I give em space.

They also don't like it when you tailgate a few feet off their bumper to catch a draft at highway speeds.

Hi CC

Nice Of you to say so!! Thank-you!!

I would like to think we are better trained also. I mean I have 2 million accident free miles, so I should be a "little" better than the average Joe. I still make mistakes too and I'm always learning out there. When you think you know it all is when something like in the video happens.

As for the tailgating thing. We do have little tricks that will make you back off a little...........

Can you imagine the emotions he was going through witnessing something like that???

Buy yeah I understand about thinking he was not going to stop. When i first saw the video I thought the same thing.

Nah, Well I wouldn't do that anyhow...Too dangerous

The best way I've found to get someone off muy butt is to drift over on the shoulder and kick up some rocks, stones etc...

They get the picture.

I very rarely do it though. Someone really has to be gettin' stupid for me to do that.

Motorcycles especially hate that!!
