I have a 1987 w/97K. It has started grinding
going up and down into 2nd. Could the shift linkage
be adjusted to stop this?

The clutch is hydraulic and can't be adjusted.

You need to make sure you have enough clutch travel, check the clutch master cylinder for leaks in front and behind the firewall, and check the slave with the boot removed.

I destroyed my transmission driving on a weak clutch master cylinder. Is the fluid level staying up in the reservoir?

You should have about 3/4"+ movement at the clutch fork.

I'd be worried about the synchro going since the grinding is limited to one gear.

2nd is usually the first to go on those units.

Ditto on that. If the clutch travel were becoming marginal, first and reverse would be the first gears in which you'd notice it during engagement.

Sure, but I'd rather spend an hour bleeding the clutch and checking for leaks before shopping for a new transmission.
