It's interesting... I have talked to three separate Corvette salvage specialists over the last few days, trying to track down an LT1 with flywheel.

Would you believe ALL of these shops sell the flywheel with the transmission???

And when I question them about the balancing issues, they get downright ignorant with me. I am not thrilled.

What it all boils down to? I am going to wait for Jason at Vette2Vette... Or start a separate build project... one or the other...

Ok... then, how do guys converting from an A4 to an MN6 handle the balance question?

Also, I called Skoggin-Dickey yesterday... the moron on the phone hung up on me! I couldn't believe it. I asked about LT1 crates, and he confirmed that yes, GM had discontinued them and SD wasn't offering any anymore. Ok... any chance of GM bringing them back, he indicated no, they only discontinued them last year. Ok, fine, tha <click>. He hung up before I could say thanks. How rude is that?

5 more seconds on a 45 second conversation and it woulda been done.

I deleted the email blast, and will never do business with them.

I re-read the Helm Manual, and they are explicit in saying (page 7-C-13 for my 1992), "To retain proper engine balance, flywheel balance weights must be installed using the following procedure..."

I am checking with Corvette specific yards. They will have a better selection. The Corvette LT1 is specific to the Corvette. It had 4 bolt mains, whereas the other LT1 versions had 2 bolt mains.

The lessor LT1s, as used in the Impala SS, were 2 bolt mains and iron heads.

You see, the crate motor options (Golan, LPE, et.al.) are so damned expensive... I am leaning towards getting a junk LT1 long block and rebuilding it completely...

Thanks for the suggestion, tho!

Interesting enough, this place only deals with corvettes. Seems windshield wiper arms are specific to corvettes to....

The flywheel should be match balanced to the engine. All 1986 and up Gen I and Gen II engines are externally balanced in the rear. It makes no difference to the trans. I can't imagine why the flywheel is included in a trans sale. If you are going to build up an engine, you can supply any flywheel you might care to use, dual mass or one piece when it comes time to balance the rotating assembly. For the sake of future interchange, make sure the clutch in independently, neutrally balanced.

RACE ON!!!

Yuppers. That's my take on the subject.

To be honest, I don't have any faith in these salvage vendors if they are selling the motor without the matching/mating flywheel. Seems rather stupid to me.

I'm with CFI-EFI.Your choice of any flywheel to suit 1 pce seal .
Given that Vette LT1's only came with DM flywheels they may be a little long in the tooth as regards the internal rubber

there is no rubber in the DM. It's springs and ball bearings.

But I prefer the idea of the single mass, regardless. However, the issue is the balance.

Without a baseline, I have nothing to work with.

I called Mr. Killibrew and talked with him about the flywheel and balancing the LT1. It was well worth the $45 for the call. I have a 92 Vette and was replacing the flywheel and clutch with OEM new products. He explained how the balancing procedure was done on the LT1. He mailed me a write up procedure on how they do it. It's trial and error, however, they have a few set positions (or patterns) of the weights that usually work if a vibration is present. It's labor intensive to try these placements as you have to insert the weights and run the engine looking for vibrations. If you still have vibrations, you remove the weights and try another pattern. So, if you're putting a dual mass on a previous auto tranny motor, you can achieve balance or at least remove the vibration.

I spoke with Chris @ Superior Chevy this week... he echoed my concerns with the salvage vendors not selling the flywheel with the motor. As far as I am concerned, Vette2Vette is the only vendor I will deal with. He has talked to Gordon on this and got simular information.

Can you forward me that info??? I would love to read it!
