On my '03 S10 the SES light has been on for a while (about a year). The shop had told me it was the gas cap code, so I didn't worry about it. Since then I have switched shops, due to an outrageous quote. I recently had to put on new front bearings, so I had my friend put them on (he's a mechanic a dealership). He told me that both bank 1 O2 sensors were bad, which they probably went bad in the past year, but there was no gas cap code in the system. I replaced the sensors, and no more code.

Glad it worked out. That's why it's nice that autozone does it for free, just to double check

Hear too.

So, I spent $150 for a ODB2 scanned because the Silverado had a SES lite.
I got a code for the secondary air sys. I figured that I'd reset the codes and see what happens.
Now after 1500 mi., I get no SES and gat no codes but 2 of the 9 "emmission readiness monitors" aren't complete. "Drive cycles need to be run to complete all the supported monitors to meet minimum required specs for Fed emissions". It's been that way for 2 months.
And the Helm's $135. Crap.

Interesting. My wife's car has been showing the gas cap code for several months. I reset it, and its fine for a few weeks, then it shows up again. I may have to look into the O2 sensors.

I think having the proper scan tool makes a big difference.
