Hello,
My MIL light is back on, on my 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo Z34. I called Chevy today, and asked how much it would cost for them just to pull the code, write the number down on a piece of paper, and hand it to me. They proceeded to explain to me in detail how complicated it is to "diagnose" a vehicle, and how the scanner takes time to pull codes, yada, yada, yada (all B.S. and untrue),........ total cost $102.55 Buying the tool is really useless for me because, it is not likely I will own another car with OBD 1.5, but under the circumstances I would prefer to own something for $100 rather then give the General $100 for something that takes 10 seconds. What are my options? I have any OBDII scanner; is there anything I can do to adapt this tool? Can I buy this B.S. online cheap. I normally would not care but I really need this car right now. Looks like I may be commuting to Da Bronx soon. DG |

Well, the only difference from a standard OBD-1 reader should be the connector right?
How many of the pins have to connect? 2? Just use some paperclips and an OBD1 tool. Maybe the free rental scantools at Autozone come with adapters? |

Yea, I'd ask AutoZone if you could do it. Don't ask their guys to do it.
I've got a ODB II scanner too, $150. So the Silverado gets a "Ck Eng". I pull the code, "Secondary Air Bank",OK. I figure I'll clear it and see what happens. Now, no Ck Eng but the emmissions perameters need more drive cycles, OK. Amonth later, still not enough cycles. I was going to get the FSM (only available at Helms-$135) and just found a page on the web for the code. It says, "cycle the air pump on and off with the scan tool", fuk, fuk, fuk, my $150 tool's just a reader. And it says it takes 40+ warm up cycles to reset the perameters. Should kept my 77 Chev van. |

What pisses me off the most is they used to give you the capability of pulling codes on the new cars just by cycling the key and hitting some switches.
They intentionally removed this feature recently from everything. Hell, they don't even have underhood lights on them now. Just weld it shut while you're at it! I suspected my new 05 F150 had an issue with injectors bleeding down. The dealer refused to diagnose it properly and kept wasting my time with other b.s. work that was unrelated. There's no shrader port on the fuel rail either, so i couldn't even check it myself! You need the $1500 scanner to do it. |

They're not allowed to anyways, and they'll probably refuse unless you've got DD's spilling out. The only thing I let them touch is the register. |

When I bought my car the previous owner had bought the ALDL modules from Killabrew, which makes it easy. I would of stuck to the paperclip method, and kept my money.

Sorry guys, forgot to post this picture...
Autozone is afraid of my car I "think" (not totally sure) Its an OBD II System with an OBD I Port? In any case its a 2 pin connect... yup 2 pin I posted about this once before, but gave up after the code went away for a while. DG |

No... BTW, I thought Bogus invented that OBD 1.5 term.
Basically GM put out OBD1 cars with ODBD2 connectors on them. For that one would need an OBD1 scantool plus an adaptor (or paper clips). BUT nevermind all that. I see an OBD1 connector on there. Rent the OBD1 scan tool and give it a shot. |

Yep, that's an ODB I connector but the serial data pinout's in a different location from ODB I.

My ODB1 has no serial data pinout, but it's old.
It just has pin B for the diagnostic input, A for ground, and another for the fuel pump relay output. I think you need to be looking on another forum for your answer. |

That's freeking insane. I don't mind spending $$ for the FSM but, getting another more expensive too pisses me off especially when I don't know if that will complete the diagnosis. In all my driving, I've never taken a vechile into a repair shop except for paint and engine machining. If i do have to take the Silverado in, it won't be to a stealership, I'll find an independent. |

Just went there, not any good for 1.5. There's not much on the web (except the usual misinfo). Dan, Go here, at least they show the pinouts and apparently have a tool that will read 1.5. http://www.actron.com/faq_detail.php?pid=16152&id=18 |

I wonder if the codes are the same for yours as mine
But I have a different connector. |

I just checked my 95 Grand Prix, which is basically the same car as the Chev. It is OBD I with the 12 pin connector. On mine I have Pin A & M as it shows in your picture. But there is also a Pin on the bottom row, 3rd from the left. I have looked at your picture and can't see another pin where mine is. But, have you looked real close with a mirror and a good flashlight to be sure?
A OBD I scanner should work on this model. Joel |

I already tried ClubGP, I am not a member of any other sites. That site specifically relates to this car and they have no clue. Quote:

I think Bill got it. I've been reading all morning, and it looks like the link to the OBD I & II scan tool will do the job. I am going to give actron a call on Monday, verify with them that this is the correct scan tool for the car, and purchase it. Its $169, BUT I don't mind spending that, IF it works for OBD I and II; that insures I can get more than 1 use out of it.

Part of the trick of ODBI, I.V and II is the standardization of the connector.
The serial data line is different, it feeds info from the CCM, IIRC. I would be curious what you learn from Actron. |

Not, yet, In fact I haven't even had time to call Actron. I've been insanely busy at work, and I picked up a couple side jobs....
I did however purchase a AVIC-F900BT for the Vette DG |
