I was thinking of putting headers on my car in the spring, it's an 87. I have a Magnaflow catback and was wondering, is it worth fussing with putting an LT car style exhaust on it, (a true dual).
Or, for a car that's stock, would it be just as good to buy a high flow 3" cat?

Long tube headers and true dual exhaust will give you some noticeable gains. Shorty headers woulld be just a waste of money (IMO).

I know to go with long tube. I'm just not sure if a single 3" pipe with a high flow cat would be as good as an LT1 true dual.

Dual 2.75" is 70% bigger than a single 3"
Dual 2.5" is 40% bigger than a single 3".

I guess the better question, is if you will even benefit from the extra area. There's a point of diminishing returns with exhaust sizing.

I put an LT4 exhaust on my 86 and love it. It is 2&3/4 inches. I also did away with the precats.

You forgot dual 3"...TWICE as big...it is what I have!!!!

On Dales car I wouldn't recommend 3"...stay with 2-3/4

Probably no benefit in 3" plus I think the 3" leads to higher interior resonance when cruising

Exactly. I guess I didn't word it very well, but that's the point of my question. Does anyone have a feel for the point of diminishing return? It may just be that the 3" single tube flows enough for my car? Or, would the dual 2.75" be a noticable difference?

It is 2.75" on my 95. I think the 92-93s are 2.5" and not sure about the 94s.

IMO, there's no need for anything larger than dual 2.5s with a 350 unless you're making power at 7K.

Dale,

Just track down a stock LT1 exhaust system... There is a Corvette recycler in Indiana, Tiber(sp?). Or even calling Vette2vette.

The thing is, stock LT1 is a throwaway piece. Hell, wait until the next Corvettes at Carlisle and when they are doing exhaust installs, see if you can snag up on one!

You will need brackets and they are cheap enough. There is a front bracket, two middle brackets and two muffler hangers.

Easy.

Get the LTs and have them adapted with bullet cats to the stock LT1 exhaust.
