I was reading about the different cars that ended up having sodium silicate poured into them. 123 C4's ended up dead. 11 Porsches, 1 Aston Martin DB7, 1 05 Mazda RX-8, 1 91 BMW M5, 67 Mercedes 560SL's, a couple of Taurus SHO's. I have to think that most of those C4's would have been keepers. I was pleased to see that no C2's made the list. What a waste!

Without ever seeing the condition of these cars you never know what they were worth. After playing around with my 85, I think I overpaid at 1k.

since cash for clunkers goes back only to 1984, C2s were safe.

SEMA got involved at one point and that's how it was set at 1984+.

Anyone who would clunker an A-M DB7 deserves to lose $50k. Moron.

The C4s? Hard to say... I wish they were more respected, I really do, but to many, they are the bastard stepchild of the Corvette world.

However, since they ARE Corvettes, I would have a tough time clunking either of mine.

Destruction of commodities... at its finest.

According to Edmunds.com, the Cash for Clunkers program cost taxpayers $24,000 per vehicle sold.

Yeah, that means each sale beyond what would've happened anyways cost $24K each. And most of the cars purchased didn't even cost $24K. And nevermind that the trade-ins were destroyed and the engines or drivetrains where not allowed to be salvaged, basically rendering the entire car useless.

A 1987 Buick GNX was also on the list, 24 Ford Lightnings, a GMC Typhoon, a couple Chip Foose F-150s, 2006 Toyota Corolla, 2006 Audi A4, a few Cadillac STS's, 1,000+ Camaros, Porsche 944s, BMW M3, M5, Z3, and 2 Roush supercharged F150s.

They got a maserati bi-turbo... I am shocked the piece of shit even started. Let alone ran long enough to do anything...

I liked the concept... but hated the implementation. Think about this for a moment:

Someone has a ragged out 1970s thing and cannot afford anythign newer. Why didn't the feds inspect all these cars and put them on the market at a reduced price to the poor?

It goes along the lines of an idea I had for the State of Delaware fleet cars. Instead of just actioning them off, price fix them for the underprivledged. They are late model, rather well maintained and reliable. Wouldn't a 5 YO Malibu be better than a 20 YO Escort?

Andy, these cars aren't being auctioned off. The motors are being destroyed, and the drivetrain can't be resold. Those parts are the majority of a car's scrap value (nevermind the vehicle runs and shouldn't be scrapped to begin with.)

The salvage yards have to be registered with the government program, and they have 6 months to recycle the car and crush it. The sheetmetal might fetch them a 2-300 bucks, minus their cost of transporting and disassembling all that crap and disposing of the refrigerant, gas, coolant etc.

It's plainly obvious the purpose of the program wasn't to help the less fortunate or even to clean up the environment. It was to give a temporary boost to new car sales.

If the purpose was to get people in more efficient cars, yes, those clunkers would have been resold down the food chain to people driving 1982 Chevy Impalas, and there would have been subsidies available for purchase of fuel efficient used cars, motorcycles, and scooters.
