Follow up on post Amsoil vsRoyal Purple vs Valvoline. My techno neighbor with Vet and I changed his oil last night. Nothing outstanding about that except his use of Amsoil for 8,000 plus miles since last change left a annoying ticking noise in the engine until fully warmed up.. We changed to Mobil 1 and within 1 minute ticking noise was gone. I really think the Amsoil had changed its viscosity index in that 8,000 mile oil change interval. Oil seemed syrupy, at operating temp when draining. Any thoughts????

Your neighbor's an idiot. Well, you asked.

Serously, it's interesting.
He should ave saved some of that oil and sent it out for a test.

8000 mi is too much imo regardless of what you read, sounds like the oil was tired. I cringe when I hear of people going 15k on synthetic and only changing the filter.
Might be good slippery stuff but its still going to carbon up and break down.

This is just a coincidence I'm sure but the only engine that I had that put the rods through the pan was using Amzoil. I never went back to it. It was a long while back and I think the gear oil they have is very good.

Unbelievable what people will do or are people idiots when it comes to cars and engines. A chemical engineer friend of the Z06 guy will analyze the oil for him.
He's a Porsche nut!! Keep you gurus updated on the drama. I'm surrounded by idiots in my neighborhood.

The major difference between synthetic and dino oil is the processing. The synth gets an extra step where the waxes inherent to crude oil are separated off. It's also the same waxes that cause sludge.

Yep, I interview with Mobil just out of college, spent a day at their dyno facility. I was 2 V8s that just came of a maxed out dyno run (synth vs dino). No sludge on the M1, a boatload on the dino.
