I was wondering if rear mounted amps and custom sub enclosures will withstand the forces of drag racing?

I am gaining ideas for a custom stereo installation in my 94 and don't want to get something cool installed and then it falls apart after some passes down the track.

I am possibly interested in a custom fiberglass sub/amp enclosure in the rear.

yes.

use 3/4" MDF and lots of RTV with 2" long drywall screws. It will be as stout as a vault.

The only thing you will notice is that it will make your car heavier. You may be adding up to 100 lbs with 3/4 mdf box, two good quality subs with heavy magnets, and an amp. You might consider a box that is removable. It's not going to be quite as pretty as a fiberglassed one that stays in place, but you will save some weight on racing days.

Yeah this is a problem because I want to do autocross and a few drag racing events that my club sponsors. I'm not a real racing weenie but still am concerned about weight and forces breaking something loose.

I guess I could do what others have done and install a 10" sub in the bin behind the passenger seat and the amp on the wall behind the seat. I wish there were more photos of C4 installs on the web. I've done some searching but not found a whole lot.

One thing I pay very close attention too at Tech Inspection is amp and speaker installations.
In a normal run at an HPDE or Autox, no problem. If you're unlucky enough to hit something, these things can become missles.

I won't let a car on track if these are loose.

Most guys do it right, everything's tight and they pass tech.

I'm sure you will, it's good that you've thought about it in advance.

Weight in back isn't a bad thing at the strip. In fact, I always run with a full tank for extra grip if the track is slippery.

I would not want a big sub box in my car though in any event, because subwoofer magnets and MDF boxes tend to hurt when they hit you upside the head. I would make it easy to remove unless it's built into the car somehow. It's not like you're heading to the track twice a week are you?

Here's my setup. It's not ideal for good sound quality or bass, but it's the best I could do without making the car look like a rolling electronics store. If I close the lid and put the seat in its normal position, its like it's not even there.

Nice clean install. I usually can not hear anything above 70mph.

I can hear my chambered exhaust system, better than music anyway.

Kevin, I'm thinking it keeps the seat from going all the way back and do you have to keep some air space between the two? I like the way it looks. Marc

I'm 5'9" but any taller and it might become an issue. I put the seat back until it starts rubbing.

I looked at some smaller amps that I could have fit under the manual seat track on the passenger seat, but I guess most years after 85 have a power seat track on that too...
