Hello. I am looking to replace the pads and rotors on my 1996 LT1. I wasn't looking for anything beyond OEM, however, I have found a company called R1Concepts where I am out the door with R1Concepts slotted/drilled rotors and Axxis ceramic pads for barely more than replacement stock or oem parts. It seems like a no-brainer, but it's usually not that simple. Any insight on R1Concepts or Axxis brakes? Part two to the question is any considerations/advice beyond what replacement of normal brakes entails on a 96? Thanks, Roger

Axxis brakes are not bad... but I worry about the "drilled rotors."

Good quality "drilled" rotors should have their holes cast in place and then chamfered so they won't stress fracture.

For street use, I would get NAPA OEM rotors and Hawk street (HPS?) pads. I don't remember the specific model. However, I am using that combo and they are great.

Bogus,
Thanks for the tip on the pads and rotors. I have heard the same about the "drilled" rotors but assumed it concerned mostly competitive applications. I'll take a look at the NAPA rotors.

Thanks again,
Roger

If you have the standard sawblade wheels the rotors are hidden anyway. Go back with solid rotors and I like the Bosch ceramic pads. I have about 40K on mine, including a lot of days at the dragstrip and other performance driving and no problems. They aren't for autoX though.

Those rotors look like a downgrade. Do you need rotors? You can get your stock rotors turned, and if you want some good bite, try a Hawk hps pad, better than stock but still street friendly. They will probably dust more and wear faster than what you have on there now.

Also, ceramic is for reducing dust and noise, but do not offer a performance advantage.

Yep, and many ceramics have a bit less braking power than stock.

It's my first 'vette, and I have only had it for a couple of months. I do have the stock "saw-blade" wheels, but don't plan to keep them for long. Sounds like the overwhelming opinion is that the low-end drilled/slotted rotors are primarily eye candy.

yes.

the idea behind sloted/drilled rotors is to release the off gasses from the pad heating. well... those gasses were caused by binding agents in the pad. Modern street pads are held together by materials that self bind under huge (5000 PSI+) pressure and stay together.

This means there are no gasses to vent.

Stick with solid and just clean them up.

If you want drilled, get good ones, like Baer or Brembo.

That is why I said "Bosch" and not just ceramic pads. They stop just fine, even when heating them up running up and down the mountain twisties or running laps at Road Atlanta.
I can not attest to any other ceramics.
ps--I get absolutley no brake dust on my wheels.

I believe the ceramics still dust, but the dust isn't as visible. Hawk also has some ceramics, but they don't claim they're any better than stock.

As for drilled, nobody casts holes in their rotors. A "quality" drilled rotor has radiused holes that are staggered to reduce hotspots and don't go through the cooling vanes.

A bumper sticker that says "I'm a douchebag" is much cheaper than drilled rotors, and gives your car the same type of look.

Thanks CC, I have slotted cad plated rotors with Hawks HPS pads on the Vette and I love them, I have D+S cad plated rotors with Wagner pads on my Camaro. I'll have to get a bumper sticker for the Camaro! Tough crowd here! Anyhow I like the "BoyRacer" look! Both work well. To the OP, If you like the look, who cares! Any benefit or drawback is probably measured in minute degrees anyways.

Welcome to the website. Lots of knowledge stored here. I like your car, it took me about 100 posts to figure out how to get a picture to print. So you are doing good!
