There's companies out there:
http://www.precisionengine.com/rebuil ... -crate-engines/index.html

http://www.gearheadengines.com/CrateEngines

http://www.rebuiltcrateengines.com/ch ... -block-engine-p-2106.html

If it was me (I'd do it myself) but, I'd have the one in the car rebuilt by someone like Pete.
I'd prefer knowing what I have not just buying one from an unknown.

I've already had some chat with Pete and that is the route I'll probably go... I am just looking at all options. Just not too many options for LTx

No there isn't.
Even if Pete's suggestions cost more, there's the "confidence factor" of knowing who did the work.

Nope! You're kidding right? I just got around to moving the car last week before my knee surgery. When the tow truck driver dropped the car in the garage he placed it so close to the wall in my garage I couldn't get the door open. I do things real slowly around here.

I'll probably get it up on stands this weekend and drop the exhaust system and drain the oil/coolant and clean any mess up. Then if I'm energetic I'll pull the pan.

Oh... I did buy a Happy Hooker, so I'm ready on that front. Mostly I have been held up by other Corvette related activities. As the Grand Poohbah of my Corvette Club I'm generally expected to be at these events car or not. I typically don't even need a Corvette as I'm always too busy organizing and running things I don't have time to have fun with the car. That is ending in January though... Sweet sweet sweet

If you were a lawyer I'd have to say you are correct, as I only have expert opinion to back that up, and I have no physical evidence yet.

I did have the car towed back after the drag races to a very reputable mechanic and had him turn it over and listen. Based on his ear and the 35 years of his experience with these cars he feels 99% sure its a spun bearing, but even he said that it might not be as bad as we think and we won't know until I take it apart.

But... I still have a high mileage bottom end with a strong new top end that needs to be addressed.

I've tried this approach with my Corvette Club, but it always gets sidelined for some other group fun!

blocks are getting hard to find,
I was lucky when I had my shortblock done that he had one.

GM had some NOS, but I believe they ran out.

I did it just like we discussed a while back. I used the aluminium racing jack from the center of the car front and rear. I pulled the jack with authority but avoided jerking it so not to pull it out from under the car. It was indeed hard to pull with those little wheels on the jack but it worked good enough for Govt. Work.

It depends. If I can get away with using the existing crank. I may go that routed just to save money right now. If I go 383 I will also need to get a different cam to match the increased displacement and a new tune. If I just have the block and crank machined and stay with the current displacement I can stay with the existing setup which was a nice combination and the cost will be lower. If I go with the 383 I will need to get a new cam picked out, new crank, associated components etc. and a whole new tune to match.

I'm really not sure until I drop that pan and see what it looks like inside.

I'm going to drain the oil into a clean container so I can easily check for metal flakes or debris.

Shouldn't, but I decided to keep my store my stock engine and find another block to build. I got a 2 bolt block, that I had splayed caps put on.
