I just got these pics from my brother. These are the World Products Motown 220.

All work done by Denny at JDS Induction in Fayetteville, GA. Fully done Combustion chamber enlarged to 69cc (I had to get the SCR down), Serdi 5 angle Valve job, Bowl/SSR port work, and intake port match. These heads are putting down some surprising numbers on our SF400, and let me tell you - They absolutely SUCKED as delivered out of the box.

This engine is for my best friend. We were in the Marine Corps together during my first enlistment. First met in Boot Camp at Parris Island in 1994 and after different MOS schools (me School Of Infantry, him Motor Transport) we both ended up in the 6th Marine Regiment for the remainder.

He has this thing for G Body's. I built him a mid 11sec (on the bottle) pump gas 406 back in 1998 for the 85 Monte he had back then...

At any rate he bought another one (86 NON T-Top SS) and he asked me build him something slightly faster this time...

His old 406 was plain worn out from all the bottled HP (NX Hit Man 150HP plate kit) he has run thru it the past 12yrs... not much was useable and even if it was I told him the parts (stock 400 crank, X rods, KB pistons) never would be up to going any faster they already had.

He gave me his budget and this is what he is getting.

396 cubic inch
10.7SCR
8.4DCR
Preped 350 4 bolt main block
3.875 stroke 4340 Eagle crank
6" Eagle ESP H beam rods.
4.030 SRP forged pistons
Speed Pro 1/16,1/16, 3/16 ring set
Clevite H - rod/main brgs
Dura Bond Cam brgs
Chet Herbert CCR253 solid roller camshaft
288/300 adv
253/266 @.050
.643/.604 lift (1.6/1.5)
108 LSA (104 ICL)
Howards Cams roller lifters
Scorpion rocker arms (1.6/1.5)
World Products Motown 220 cyl heads (little work done)
Pro Product Super Hurricane intake (little work done)
AED 750HO carb

He already has a built TH350 and Dayco 10" 3500 stall. 10 bolt rear with a Prescision Gear 3.73 R&P and an Auburn Pro Series Posi all from his old car.

I'm really scared for that 10bolt rear this time around... His old 406 was a hyd flat tappet cam and had ported 305HO heads with 2.02/1.6 valves, RPM intake and a 3310 750 Holley. 375-400HP normally aspriated. The car ran 12.80's on motor and mid 11's on the bottle in true street trim on real street tires.

My EA says the new 396 is going to put down an easy 540HP normally aspriated... And now that I got the heads back from the port shop - I'm thinking that I was way too conserative on my cyl head inputs....

I'm hoping to have it completed shortly after Thanksgiving for him.

Everybody think it'll have enough power??
Will

Wow that's a lot of power! Nice cylinder head work, too. Now with a cam that big and a 3500 stall, is this a mainly drag car, or will he drive it on the street, too?

These are the threads I really dig thanks for posting.

Thats going to be a strong runner for sure, bet it makes your power estimate possibly even better. What did the heads wind up making number wise-

That sb should sound nasty.

Thanks. Denny Schmidt is a very well know cyl head porter in the south eastern US. He has always done good work when we needed him to.

It is a "Street Car" mainly. There is a very large underground grudge racing scene where he lives... Other than that it will be driven to the local hang out on weekends and maybe once a week to work.

I expect the converter will actually flash 3800-4000rpm behind this motor but you would be very surprised at how tame an engine like this is to drive around when the fuel and ignition curves are tuned correctly.

Been looking for that"scene" out here too Im afraid its dead. Too risky as they can take your car and crush it.
Id probably get wasted anyway mines tame compared to most out there these days.

Bet its plenty driaveable too many are afraid to run solids these days. They are MUCH tamer manner wise than what they read on paper. SR Im using now has more vacuum and better manners than my old hyd. FT that was over 10 deg smaller and /170 less lift! Go figure

On our bench (SF400) they are pulling 288@.600 and then go turbulant after .650 (alot of swirl because of the wing in the port). This is with a clayed port inlet surround. They pulled like 291CFM on Denny's SF600 and that is well within the difference I'd expect to see between our benches. I can dig up the sheet he gave me and fill in the full curve but they are a pretty strong head.

Still expensive when you look at what they cost when they were orginally bought (like $1000 I think) and the $500 in port work it took to make them flow what World advertises OTB.... NOT VERY COST EFFECTIVE.

They were horrible OTB. The valve job looked like a freaking 2yr old was running the cutter... The things barley cracked 265CFM and sounded dirty as hell at low lift and they sound like a train past .450 Maybe Bill Mitchells grand children were playing in the shop when these were done and they somehow ended up in boxes - I don't know....

Once he got the first intake port done Denny called me and wanted me to let him go all out on them. When we were talking about why NOT - he was all like "Your running these on a street car!! Pump Gas!! Man what a waste!! Do you know how good I could make these things."

I was like Denny, When you lifted this up on your bench - you did notice that these were steel 23* SBC heads right?? WTF did you think they were going on.... I mean it's not 1975 anymore.... Head Porters LOL.

I know what you mean. All thru the 1990's it was raging. Lots of $$$ changing hands and like everything some folks took things too far...

My dad almost lost his business when a customers car got away from him one night and hit some people who were spectating... A 15yr old boy was killed. Very long and drawn out lawsuit with the boys family (they sued everybody).... The car owner/driver settled out of court. Took a long time and a lot of $$$ for us to beat them.

The police in the VA, MD, DC metro area where I live these days are crazy about it. I've been "talked to" by local PD and quized about why my car is "owned by an LLC" and has GA tags. It's been made 100% crystal what happens to people/cars that get caught here. That said - HUGE scene over in PG County, MD.

Miss those days, late 80s/90s almost any day of the week there would be a run spot. Wed meet about 8 or so and go from place to place til the wee hours of the morning man those were good times. About 1-2am the trailered cars would show up or sometimes they would get ballsy and drive them out.
Now the streets are empty except for some imports "racing" on a 100 yrd stretch if that.
Things have changed over the years.

my brother was into street racing 45 years ago. It went on out in the boonies of central Delaware, late at night. His ride was a 1966 (then new!) Ford Galaxy 500 hard top. White with a black top, pin stripe and interior. Bench seat, with an 8-track and AM radio.

Underhood, it had a 335hp 390/4bbl, 4spd, 3.91 LSD rear, manual steering and brakes. A strippy, really. A GI ordered it, but was transferred to Vietnam before it arrived. Paul got it on a deal, cause no one else wanted it!

It was all this noise and furry... and he won as many races as he lost, but it was fun!

By the time I got my license in 1981, there wasn't any "organized" street racing. Some random stuff on the highway, but nothing that I ever heard of. Then again, I had a Pacer, and really, why would I bother to go looking for street racing?

As for your friends car, Will, uh, can you say "Strange Dana 60?" I think he will need it.

That is really a nice looking port job. Do you have any pics of before?

I did not take any pics of the heads OTB but I found these on the web.

As for having a Pacer. You were sittin on a gold mine and didn't even know it. There was a time in my life when I would have built a Pacer just to go racing...

I'd bet I could talk my way into 5 cars and the hit on anybody... Can you imagine when the smack starts and you have to call dude out as to why he's scared to race the Pacer??

S60 seems a bit big for that app. a MWC 12 bolt or 9in will be better and drain less power.
