Some friends and I hit the drag strip in Fayetteville, NC today. I ended up with a new best:

1.7069
7.51 @ 94.62
11.61 @ 121.13

I think most people on here know what the car is, but if there is anyone new:

-91 vette, six speed
-383 with AFR heads
-315/35-17 nitto drag radials
-Mseven tune

It was hot (80+ degrees) and there was a headwind all day.

Still digging the nittos, getting dead hook with 4000-4500 RPM launches today.

[edit]To credit my tuner, couldn't be done without him![/edit]

Wow that's fast. Is that all motor or are you spraying?

Great times! I'd bet off the spray.

I gotta get some of those Nitto's! Which tire is it? Is there more than one version of the DR's?

I don't know if there is more than one nitto drag radial or not. I think mine say, "Extreme drag" on the sidewall.

About 2 months ago, the car trapped 123.5 MPH, but today 121 is all it would do. The heat and head wind was murder today. A buddy of mine runs pretty consistent 118 MPH in his C5 Zo6, today 116 was all he could muster.

I'd really love to see the car trap 125, and I think on a cooler day and with some tuning/driver tweaks it might make it.

Nice job Josh!

And you probably miss the bad DA and bad track prep of RMR here in Utah. Plus our season ends in the end of Sept. This year we had the best racing conditions of the year the first 3 weeks of Oct... and our track is closed... NICE!!!

Also, big thanks to Mseven. I'm on his out of the box tune, and the car is running fantastic!

I just went and looked at them, they are NT555R's.

I started with 25 PSI in them, and went down to 22 after a couple runs.

you should try the nto5rs they are way better . i had mts 315x35x17 before and the new nittos are way better for me . friends have said i should go to the 275x40x17, saying the larger sidewall would help with my launch

I'll probably do those next I guess. The nittos on the car now are still pretty new, but once they wear out I'll give those a shot.

Are you using the stock gears in your Z?

My father has a 91 Z with a DRM 475 package and it's a nightmare to try and launch well. The LT5's make power at such a high RPM, it's hard to get them to leave well with the stock gears.

i have 2 zr1s a 90 thats has headers ported inj housing and plenum a custom dr gas exhaust fidanza flywheel and 410 gears and a callaway 475super natural92zr1 with headers and 390 gears . vids on utube under bradzr1 just click on my favs . if your dads car has the stk flywheel, that limits his launch rpm to 2000 nothing more even with drs . and the tech that works the best is to slow let out the clutch ie first 3-10 and roll into the throttle instead of the standard dump the clutch and slam the gas . if he is using street tires then it becomes even dicier . stk tires 22-25 lbs and leave from an idle and feed the car gas slowly . i know its tough to do. its drag racing but he will run faster this way . i have been drag racing since 1971 and its tough for me to get into the 1.7s 60fts . i do believe that the 315x35x17 have too short a sidewall for a manual car . that the 275 or 285 x40 x17 would work better even thought he tire is narrower . next step is some slicks , but then things have a funny way of breaking . best mod to the c4 irs is the spicer 799 series u joints ,dennys drive shafts sell a kit for both 1/2 shafts and drive shaft. good ins . busting a drive shaft can also mess up your body pretty bad . have a great day.also finally i think that the 3.45s are just as fast at the strip , easier to launch and 1 less gear change for the zr1 top of 3rd instead of top of 4th. a friend i IILonois proved that out . feel free to pm me if i can answer any other ?s for you

Thanks for the tips man!

Why the struggle for 1.7's? With that kind of seat time, I would think 1.7's would be just about automatic for you by now?

i wish i knew , have had a couple of friends try the car out and its the same for them , they feel the tire is part of the problem too stiff a side wall for a manual. we are going to fontana this weekend and going to remove the front sway barand try some rubber snubber extentions i made for the car so that she will only squat about 1/2 in . will share the results . also these nittos seem to 60 ft the same from 24-16 lbs . plus my car weighs 3650 lbs and the lt5 motor is heavier by about 100-125 lbs which isnt good .with my mile an hr sure would think that 1150-60 would be possible . dont want to go any faster as i dont want to istall a roll bar. i have an 88 mustang with an lt5 and auto that i use when i want to go alot quicker . but its so pretty and new its hard to go out and flog her . it sure drives my ford buddies nuts though

also we might try a set of 345s for kicks in one of the cars . the lt5 gets rpms so darn quick and tons of tq down low make launching with 390- 410 like skating on ice ,. i think that 1.6-7 might be alot more possible with 3.45s my buddy pete in the midwest has run 11.04@128+ mph with a fully ported and cammed yet stk cubed zr1, and he still uses the 3.45,in fact he tried the 4.10s and went slower .he is on utube also . you should ck it out it sounds awsome

What type of mileage are you guys getting out these Nittos (555Rs or NTO5s) and MTs?

Nice times, you are gonna fly with spray.

i only use the nto5s when i race. but i do have to drive 195 miles each way to do so. so i guess i have about 2k miles on them and 25 runs and they hardly have shown any wear
