Well after 8 events of autox with a stock 700r4 with no cooler and ~370rwhp my 2nd gear finally gave up. Will be dropping it tomorrow hopefully to begin the fun.

Also ordered koni shocks to get rid of my STOCK 1985 bilsteins. Hope to have a much smoother ride.

Any advice on dropping the trans?

first gonna drop the exhaust from the headers back but Looking at it I will need to lean the engine to get to the bellhousing bolts.

You won't need to lean it.

This is the abridged version:

1. Drop exhaust
2. Remove starter
3. Remove inspection cover
4. Remove three bolts that hold converter to flywheel
5. Drop c-beam, use jack to support trans
6. Drop drive shaft
7. Lower trans to reach coolant lines, remove same.
8. Raise trans, remove bolt retaining trans fill tube.
9. Lower trans and use long extension and 9/16" socket, swivel is the best, will remove all bolts EASY.
10. Remove wiring/linkage
11. Remove trans

I suggest the cheapo $60 tranny jack from Harbor Freight.

I expect this will take about 1 hour. 90 minutes tops.

I've heard Autox can be rough on auto transmissions. I believe it. Build it better. Good luck.

And this is why I love the guru.
I have a trans jack already.
Would this be the best time to put in a trans temp guage or can I do this while its in the car?

Nothing is easier on a C4 whilst it is in the car... you should know that by now!

Since you are tearing it out, do it then.

I'd drain the fluid first, before pulling it out.
To get the C-beam out the engine needs to be tilted back slightly, that's why I'd also remove the distributor cap.

You might need 6 ton stands in back to get enough height to wheel the trans out while on the jack.

I had to with my 6 speed at least, although the shifter sticks up on that pretty high.

I agree. I just pulled mine last month and I had to put it up on 6 Ton stands extended about 3/4. I still needed a little height to get it out from under the car. I waited to remove the engine and had the front wheels off. I rolled it right out through the drivers side wheel well.

The problem with the HF Transmission Jack is that it sits pretty high even when it is fully closed. Its cradle is a good 8" above the floor, so you need to lift that car that much more. I think Pete told me I needed 18" of clearance but I think a few more are even better.

On my 94, the C-Beam wasn't too bad coming out. The pain is over now so I can say this. I did wrestle with it a bit, but not too bad.

Good Luck -- As I have said before... If I can do it, anyone can do it.

My advice, get it as high as you can and have a multitude of different length extensions and swivels.
