When beer sales start to decline it's an obvious sign.

I spoke with the local gent who owns the party store I frequent. We were discussing the economy, and he explained to me what he calls "liquor store economics"

As most of you know, the shelves behind the counter contain the booze, and the higher you go the more expensive the bottle. This is primarily so that customers see the good stuff when they are shopping. If you're after some "Old Crow" whiskey you don't need to see the bottle...

Anyway, he commented that his business is not really as affected by the down economy as most others are. However, people rarely encroach on the top shelves these days...

They buy more volume because they drink at home instead of at the bar / restaurant, but they buy cheaper booze. More quantity, but less quality. His sales dollars are relatively the same as in the good times.

pretty amusing state of the union barometer.

Actually the faulty logic behind it was that in tough economic times people tended to drink more. As the morals of society have changed and law enforcement has stepped it up a notch, getting hammered or drowning your sorrows is generally frowned upon. A DUI/DWI can easily run you $6500 just in attorney fees unless of course you use do diligence and take it home or use a designated driver or other transportation. I practiced a level amount of drinking. I drank in the good times, I drank in the bad, I drank on Sunday afternoon or on Tuesday morning. It was always five o'clock somewhere. One thing I knew. My stomach didn't know what time it was nor did it care.

Suicide Warning Signs

Unemployment and other kinds of financial distress do not "cause" suicide directly, but they can be factors that interact dynamically within individuals and affect their risk for suicide. (e.g., depression, bi-polar disorder) that place them at greater risk of suicide.

These are some of the signs you may want to be aware of in trying to determine whether you or someone you care about could be at risk for suicide:

* Threatening to hurt or kill oneself or talking about wanting to hurt or kill oneself
* Looking for ways to kill oneself
* Thinking or fantasying about suicide
* Acting recklessly
* Seeing no reason for living or having no sense of purpose in life

Lets face it folks, without the govt helping us identify these early warnings signs,
Who would have guessed the symptoms?...... God Help US!
