My buddy has an Extended cab Sierra that we put a pre-fab box in. It fit under the rear folding seat and instead of the subs being installed on top, they are mounted on the bottom so that they are not exposed. I kind of like the idea for the Vette. I used mine to go to the store and such so I've been hesitant to put a box back there with my 10's in it.
So, I was thinking of building a box that I could install my 10's on the bottom side with a recess in the top to mount the amp with some plexi over it.
My Boston G2's need 1 cubic foot each.

Any input? thoughts? rants?

I haven't even started measuring or anything. Just a slow day at work.

SQ isn't usually as good with downward firing subs. There has to be room for the air to move. Why not build a conventional box and put a grill over it?

Kevin has a nice box built into the passenger side storage compartment with a 10" in it. 2 10s is a lot in a vette. Then again I used to have 2 hard hitting JL 10s in my s10 pointing right at my head...I was 19, though. Grew up a bit since then...

One of these days I will grow up.

Right now they are in the back of the VW in a box that's way too big to put in the back of the Vette.

I used 101% of the space available in there but I think the box is still too damn small to get much bass out of it. The sub probably pulls a vacuum on that small air space which means the cone can't move as freely or displace as much air.

There are different types of boxes, some with the subs firing into the box, and venting it... bandpass box, other types. I don't know the details, but worth looking into before you start cutting and measuring. Keep in mind a different type of box may require a different air volume.

2 cu ft doesn't sound like much, but it's a lot of space.

In a vette I would personally do a sealed box. Bandpass box is large and requires knowledge of how to tune the port for correct waves. A ported box is even bigger. A sealed box requires more power to get the same amount of spl, but takes up less space.

His box is sealed and there is a ledge around the bottom so that the subs aren't hitting the floor.

A friend of mine had a honda CRX... in the back, he had a 4th order band pass box, with a single 12" (or 15", it's been a while) sub. Orion, IIRC; the amp was Orion. The box FILLED the entire storage area of the CRX. Absolutely MASSIVE.

The box that my two are in right now is 12x12x24 made out of 3/4 MDF and I still have a lot of room in the trunk of the Jetta. The amp is mounted in a custom "rack" that my buddy and I made out of MDF and carpeted. When the box is not in there no one would ever know there's anything in there unless the power is on and the HiFonics is lit up.

Once I get the tune finished and these damned RR's set right I am going to work on it.

A sealed enclosure is always smaller than a vented box.

Sub manufacturers will generally recommend one type over the other AND recommend air space.

I typically like tight crisp bass so I build boxes a little bit smaller than the recommended sealed size, and add poly fill inside. This fools the sub into thinking it has more room than it does.

For instance. I have an 800 RMS watt 10" sub with 21mm of excursion...in a box with only .5 cubic feet of air space. The box takes up very little room yet the bass is crisp and clear and tight and will make your organs tingle.

ALWAYS match the RMS wattage handling of the sub to the RMS output of the amp. The amp can outdo the sub a little bit, but not the other way around.

Also, pick a sub that has a large Xmax, or excursion. This is the distance the cone travels while at full excursion. The larger the excursion, the better the low frequencies...bass.

There are other factors but typically when a sub manufacturer builds a sub with a high Xmax they are building a quality sub.

Cheap manufacturers have very low Xmax specs...10mm or lower.

Sub specs.

Speaker Size
10"
Rated RMS power handling
300 watts

Nominal Impedance
Dual 4-ohm

Mounting Cutout Diameter
9-1/4" (235mm)

Mounting Depth
6-9/16" (166mm)

Linear Excursion
2 inches

Recommended Enclosure
0.5ft ³ (14.2 L) volume sealed

I thought it was a rec. 1 sqft sealed. I run them at 2-ohm

I can't remember off the top of my head what amp is in there.
