The passing of my Red Bike. The 1995 R1100gs.....

Resized Image

She did well, game me 60k miles in some 10 years, and was killed by 2 stupidly placed $13 plastic cam chain tensioner rails that require a near complete engine tear down to replace (to the tune of $2500+). The upper and lower rails broke (in many pieces)

OK, so much for feeling sad about this:

Say hello to the new member of the family!!

Some die, some just sit in the shed.

It's one of those "dirty little secrets" you find out about at the worst possible time.
My RT has the same rails - just a design in the oil-head engine. There's 2 rails left and 2 right just to keep the cam chain tension. The outer part of the rail you could cheat on, it's the inner part that requires the rebuild.

Harley had the same thing for about 7 years until they converted over to hydrolic tensioners - BMW basically did the same thing in the new R designs.

The K series is an entirely different beast - quick and nimble. We're still getting to know each other.....

You must bring it by, Brian!

Oh, and yea, most BMWs sound more like electric motors than anything else.

Yeah I know guys who had problems with those tensioners, Early on I changed my twin cams out to a gear drive set up from S & S thus eliminating the tensioners altogether.

Harley said the gear drives made to much noise which is funny when I can't hear anything over the sound of my Rienhardt exaust anyway. Or my ear plugs when the motor is off.

I'll put it on the list - after all, you live sooooo far away (LOL).

This one doesn't sound like an electric sewing machine - it has a Remus aftermarket exhaust - it makes a little noise.....

Not as loud as some, but you know it's coming....

Sorry to hear about the bike, Brian. But the new one looks sweet. I've always like the BMWs, never had my own. I ride my uncle's 87 (ks? been a while) when I'm in town during the summer months so it can get a few miles. He also bought a Ducati, I believe, so I'll have to check that out.
