Hello guys,
Well after Matak (Matthew) busted his butt helping me Wednesday night (which I'm in debt to him!), we got the new FIC injectors installed. I finished everything up today just to find injectors 1 & 3 leaking. Just got off the phone with Bill at FIC and after some good conversation and advice I'm "reseating" the drivers side bank.
I did get it started earlier and fired right up and ran pretty well.....for the usuall 4-5 minutes, then slowly idled down and stalled. The same problem I've been having all spring.
I pulled the codes and it's giving me a code 51. MEM-CAL according to the FSM. Which it says is a problem with the PROM or ECM.
I'm trying to plan ahead, are there any vendors of new or rebuilt ECM's? and or PROM's? My car is an 89 w/ AT.
Thanks much guys!
-Mike

I have a spare ECM to try, but my memcal was transferred to my zif adapter chip. We can also pull it and see if it's seated right.

Reseat the injectors farther down in the manifold and see if they still leak. Otherwise we'll have to grind the fuel rail bosses down on the intake manifold so it sits lower.

UPDATE:

I followed Bill from FIC's direction and used Vaseline on the o-rings (don't laugh, it worked!). Both of the leakers sealed this time.
So that leaves me with the ECM problem which now seems worse. Idle was all over the place, from 700-1200, keeps wandering then slows and stalls.
I did find a few places on line that rebuild them, also found a few on ebay. Any advice either way?
We're getting closer!
Thanks again!

The ecms are readily available for under $50 as they were used in tons of gm models in the late 80s early 90s. If it's the prom you might have a harder time finding that. We'll have to check it out. As I mentioned in my pm, it's easy to get to.

I had the same code on my 84. I pulled the computer and reseated the chip about 3 times and each time unhooking the battery to clear the code, but the code kept coming back. I replaced the chip about two years ago and haven't had the code return. Had the same symptoms that you did.

Thanks for the info...
I have the ECM out, PROM looked to be installed O.K. and the original one. I've located a replacement ECM, we'll give it a try.
Hopefully this will solve it.
I'm really hoping to make it to Bloomington Gold next weekend at Pheasant Run!

If the ecm doesn't fix it, then it probably is the chip. You taking the car to Bloomington Gold or just going to spectate?

UPDATE:
Well I purchased a used ECM from a member on CF, installed it this evening and the car runs smooth. No stalling, no codes. So hopefully that was the problem. I'll take it out tomorrow for a drive and see how it performs.
BIG sigh of relief!....

Yep I've used a little bit of motor oil on the seals, def. helps them slip into place and helps keep them from tearing as well..

Glad you got it fixed! Matt's an awesome guy and a really good friend! Hopefully we'll get to meet you this summer as well!
