Is there any limitation to OE roller lifters with regards to cam lift? I am currently building a 383 and my lobe lift is 0.377"/0.366" (.603/.586 at the valve with 1.6 rockers). I read an article recently (I don't remember the source of the article) that indicated stock OE roller lifters were not suitable for cams with valve lifts over about 0.540". This was the first I had ever heard of this.

What is the general consensus regarding lifter choice? OK to use OE? My original lifters are in very good shape and I am thinking about reusing them if the lift won't be an issue.

TIA

Lots of people use stock LTx and LSx lifters with valve lift in the 0.6-0.7 range.

So I think what you read is wrong at least as far as LTx/LSx lifters.

I agree. Just as an example, the LS7 runs .591 valve lift. I've also heard that the stock LS7 lifters are a cheap alternative to aftermarket parts for small blocks (Gen I and II). Can anyone confirm that?

I don't know the limits of the stock parts but they do seem very good. My lift, with 1.6 RRs has never been over .525". But at that lift, they endured from 93K miles until about 116K miles when I installed a new stroker shortblock. The lifters were still performing well, but since I had acquired another very low mileage factory set, I installed them at that time. It's a 1995 LT1.

I have CompCams stock replacement hydraulic lifters in my LT1 383. My lift at the valves (also 1.6 RR) is 0.574/0.571. No issues.

However, due to the stock design I was warned by Comp not to take the car over 6500 RPM very often, as they can not pump themselves up fast enough to remain lubricated. This was unfortunate as I was looking for a redline around 7200 with my other components. I would have spent the extra money to get "better" lifters had I thougt about this during the part selection process.

All that said, my limiter is set at 6700 and I see it frequently...

I'm running 605/622 lift with stock GMPP lifters.

FYI: You can pick up a set of LS7 lifters for ~$100.
