Something to think about this winter

http://www.hoosiertire.com/safetywarning/index.htm

Quote:
FREEZE WARNING
Freeze Crack Advisory: This advisory addresses proper storage and use of Hoosier tires in cold conditions. Hoosier Tires, especially asphalt and hard compound tires, may experience Rubber Cracking if the tires are transported, crushed, flexed or stressed when frozen. The following guidelines are provided to avoid this problem.
1. Always store Hoosier Racing Tires indoors at temperatures above 32° F.
2. If tires have been subject to 32° F or less, allow them to warm to room temperature (about 70° F)
for a minimum of 24 hrs before tire is mounted, transported or flexed.
3. Always use spare tires not intended for future competition to store vehicles for prolonged periods
of time or winter transport.
4. If below freezing temperatures are expected, please consider shipping tires once more favorable conditions exist.
Do not use tires that have evidence of Freeze Crack Damage.

BTW not just Hoosiers

Most mfrs even suggest that Z rated performance tires not be used below 32F.

I have done it, but it's like driving on rocks. They do warm, but don't expect much for the first mile or 2... even then!

The upside of living in SoCal... one tire. Summer dry. Perfect.

Yes, and I remember moving to CO from CA in the middle of February with a little snow on the ground and colder than all get out. Moved the cars from the carrier into the garage, my lady's 94 convertible and my 89, had to use a come-along to get them past the driveway curb up the driveway and into the garage, major pia. Not winter cars!!

Lets see C2 hummm. . . don't remember 315/35's being on those . It was kinda wierd, just sat there floating on the snow and ice no chance to reach the pavement, didn't move a bit .

Driving in the snow was never a problem. But, changing a rear wheel bearing with the car parked on a snow bank wasn't fun.

My tires don't last long enough to worry about freeze damage during my travels.

Although these Nitto NT05s are pretty soft for a street tire.
