In regards to the C4 half shafts:
How many versions of the aluminum half shafts were there through the different model variations? Does anyone have a set they can measure for me? Length from joint center to joint center, diameter, and weight? Did the ZR1 have a heavier duty half shaft than the other models or did they all share the same half shaft. Does the half shaft use 1330 or 1350 joints? Thanks guys. |

Can't help with length or weight, but the half shaft uses the 1350 series u-joint.

84-96 all fit the same.
According to the parts fiche, there were actually two part numbers. I don't know why. 84-88 auto transmissions had a different part number that was later discontinued. 84-88 Auto Trans - 14046912 Everything else - 1223032 There are a few companies that have supposedly stronger shafts (aftermarket, cryo treated, etc) but Will drag raced all last season on stock shafts with no real problems. |

I don't need anything super strong, but I figured if the same shaft was used on base cars and ZR1s then it wouldn't matter which year or model I got...they would all be the same. Mainly I just want the lighter aluminum shaft, and while I will have to shorten them, I like that, near as I can tell, they use the same 1350 joint as my C3 half shafts.

yup. 1350 joint... I don't have a length spec, tho... I can get it, I need to crawl under there next weekend and do brakes and such.
These are quite light, actually. If you need some, get a set from vette2vette.com, his used prices will be very attractive. |

The weight differences seem to be worth the couple hundred it'll cost to have them shortened. I know they use the same joint so really I just have to take my stock shaft in with the C4 shafts, and he can measure from one to the other. I have no doubts the shaft will hold up fine to my non aggressive driving style. The project actually started out as a research job I was doing to see what it would take to put the aluminum D44 from the late C3 into my '77 to replace the iron unit. So far it's a mountain of fabrication that may not be worth the 30lbs. |

As stated all halfshafts from 1984-96 are for all purposes the same.
In fact I currently run an orginal 84 on the drivers side and a 95 on the right side of my race car. They are 18" long. 1350 U-Joints. Plenty strong for anything anyone wants to with IRS. I constantly see the know it alls on CF quip about how the factory alum half shafts are the weak link but thats nonsense. I crush the needles out of the U-Joints before anything. The only time I have ever had to replace halfshafts is after a U-Joint failed. Will |

I know early ZR1's had STEEL halfshafts.
They were a lot stonger. Denny's can make you ones that are even stronger. The stubaxles are the next to break I have some 32 spline stubaxles made up, stock is 26 |
