filter? K&N.

Oil? I use basic Castrol GTX, but you may want to check out the high-zinc content racing oils.

Also, I change mine out about 100 miles in and again at 1000, then it should be ok.

I would change to synthetic at about 4k to 5k miles.

Flat tappet cam? If so, buy the special, expensive break in oil that contains zinc for flat tappet cams. Do not use synthetic for break in.

I changed my break in oil at 20 minutes, then 500 miles, then 1500 miles, then 3000 miles. Overkill, but cheap insurance.

thanks for the replies!
it's a retrofit roller cam. the guy at oreily's suggested mobil 1 synthetic plus lucas additive.
do you reuse the same oil filter after you change the oil at 20 min. or 100/500 miles? or is it a new filter each time?

We don't even do that with race engines, and the pro builders don't.

Warm it up, run it to readline in a couple gears, the rings will be seated.

Run it a few miles and change to synth, done.

Well Bill, you are welcome to do that but I don't have the luxury of rebuilding my motor every season.

I don't do it on street motors either Matt.

And I got 100,000+ on the last one.

Builder said he would have broke it in on the dyno, but I needed to get 200 miles on the clutch 1st in order to break it in.
