I rough them up a little with a wire brush, then rinse away the crap. Next, I add a dab of vasoline to the male and female ends, mate them, tighten them up and I'm good to go. Make sure the wires are clean too. Only use approved connectors and hardware of course.

Seriously, mix some baking soda in warm water and apply liberally to the terminals, battery, and tray. Then rinse with water.

Yea, baking soda first.
A little wire brush or 220 sand paper to get the oxidation off.
Vasoline, been doing it for years, it keeps the oxygen away from the connection.

Has anyone tried using Coke? I heard that dissolves the stuff.

I just brush em off with a brass brush and try to not get the debris anywhere important.

The dried battery boogers are probably nasty concentrated stuff.

That's why I like to flush the area well. Battery boogers will break down in water and rinse away, hopefully out the bottom and onto the ground. Does baking soda neutralize the acid? I used to clean my rusty chrome wheels with Coke and a Brillo pad when i was a kid.Worked like a charm. On batteries it would be an acid on acid application. What do our chemical engineers have to say about this?

I also use Coke to clean my teeth, instead of brushing. So I got lots of extra brushes my dentist keeps giving me.

This out of practice Chemical Engineer says use baking soda. Baking soda is a base. Mixing a base with an acid produces water and a salt. Hence the need to rinse with fresh water. Coke contains phosphoric acid. It is a good cleaner, but still leaves you with a corrosive acid.

The baking soda is the stuff, follow procedures as stated so far, especially the heavy flushing to make sure no traces are left in isolated areas to cause problems. Do avoid coating with Vaseline or any other petroleum product though. It's not a good conductor and over time may seep down between the terminal and the post. And I know, our cars generally have the side posts (though not mine) but problems can still occur. Pick up a can of the protective, spray on coating for this purpose, it's good stuff even if a bit messy.

Sorry Notorious, I can't agree with ya about the Vasoline. I've done this to every battery I've had both top and side posts. And as far as seeping inbetween the terminal and post, I coat the terminal and post before I put them together. I've never had any kind of failure or corrosion problem. I did this on my 77 Chev van and ran it this way for 350,000 miles and 28 years, so I figure that's a fairly good long term test.
Also, when I was working, I sold contact lubricant thet was petroleum based.
